Nottingham is an excellent urban high school. Students learn in an environment in which diversity is simply part of the landscape. Teachers challenge students to excel in a wide range of learning opportunities from AP and college based courses to ESL and technical training (at Central Tech). You will find a wide range of student activities and interests as well as kids from a wide range of economic and social backgrounds. Is it perfect? No - but it does provide opportunities and encourages students. The principal, teachers, and staff really make an effort. They know the students and work hard to enhance the learning environment. I have witnessed excellent plays, and musical events (band, jazz band, drumming, and vocal groups). Students are involved in things like Science Olympiad, Mock Trial, and Math team. Sports are generally open to all students. Those who participate generally learn and do well.

Overall a great, diverse education for my two children.College prep? It has been a tough transition coming from this high school where mediocrity was accepted to college where excellence is expected. My kids wouldn't have changed a thing, felt safe, connected and had so many 'real world' learning experiences that other schools may not have offered.Hopefully my second child will make the transition to college expectations as my first did- took 3 semesters but finally is maintaining a 3.2 at a excellent university on the east coast. This school is what you make out of it..beware of 'coasting' through because there is no coasting in college. The guidance office needs to do much more counseling, especially for college bound students and those who should be thinking of college.(Maintain high expectations for all students)

Has a good academic program with staff that are very supportive. They have a variety of extracurricular activities with something for almost every type of interest. Parent involvement is average.

Most of the teachers I've heard about (I have an 11th grader there) are quite good and are doing the best with what they have, but the place is extremely chaotic and often not very conducive to learning. I think the teachers have lowered their standards because of it, and so bright students are not terribly challenged. What is an AP class there would be a standard class at schools in affluent areas elsewhere across the nation. The orchestra is not very good, though the band is (especially the jazz band). The sports program overall is not very competitive, at least in certain sports (football, baseball, softball, etc.). It's great if your kid isn't terribly good at sports but wants to play, but depressing if they like to win. I'm not very aware of the level of parent involvement -- I would say it is average. The office staff is rude.

I'm a current student at nottingham and i personally feel this is the best high school in the city. This is the only high school in the district that is not overcrowded. They specialize in performing arts like music and acting. They have plays all the time. The only bad thing is some studnet just don't care and create SOME trouble, not alot but some.

BASIC

Want to improve this school's profile?

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.
