While I'm sure the previous reviews did apply to the school during that time, I would not say the same about South High School today. There is a good handful of experienced, very helpful teachers, but many others come and go, usually because they are too incompetent to teach or because of cutbacks that result in them having to leave, which applies especially to the regents classes. Many of the administration's rules are superfluous and only enforced when it comes to impressing the Superintendent of schools (I've seen this firsthand and it makes me sick). The guidance counselors are helpful, when they're available. While the students are well-rounded and hard-working, I've seen a great deal of bullying occur in the halls, which are overcrowded and overpopulated, making it easy for these things to go unnoticed. The academic programs are taught to cover subjects tested on regents/AP examinations. If you want your child to be taught to the test and receive the best score they can, know that it leaves little room for free expression in class, such as debates/in-depth discussions. If your child is hardworking and participates in activities, they will do well at South.

My child has found a wonderful, diverse world in vshs. The teachers never let a student falter, guidance (and parents) are intensely involved with each student which is of utmost importance in a youngsters future endeavors, knowing adults are backing the efforts they make to succeed. The extra curricular activities are too numerous to name, and in the several years my child has attended so far, only one student issue (a fight involving only 2 kids) has occurred. The kids all know each other and they all seem friendly to each other, at least in school so far as I know. I would highly recommend vshs and it's surrounding community for a quality life and education.

There are a handful of good teachers, and the principal does not seem to have the desire to get to know the students. That aloofness makes it difficult to foster unity between the students with the higher order responsible for the adminstration related to their education.

This is a great school with a caring stuff and excellent courses and possibilities. The guidance department really guides and the after school programs are great. The best indication is our son's enthusiasm to get up every morning and hurry to get to school. The only thing this school is missing is a ESL program (English as a Second Language).

I do not think South High School is a great school like others say. I believe the rules are overdone and ridiculous. Half the teacher cannot teach at all and the principle is not a very good one. Thankyou.
