Horrible. Went so far downhill in the past few years since my two older children graduated that my youngest child now attends another school. The teachers are mostly nice, however the current/newish principal needs to go and many of the kids attending now are disrespectful and unruly in class, oftentimes making it impossible for the rest of the class to learn. Now that my child is no longer attending South, his grades have improved by over 30% and is making honor roll!
Long Island has changed. I used to live in Long Island as a child. I moved to the city after getting married. After my children were born I decided to move back to Long Island,so that they could get a quality education. Instead, I got high taxes and an ongoing battle with the school district over what "quality education" really is. The standards here have sunk so low that my children felt more challenged in the city. There is smut being read in the classroom to "peak children's interest", I was told by administration. Reading about weed smoking parents and risque sexual encounters fosters my children's growth how? It's a shame when I have to suggest them reading "the classics". I have to put my children in extra classes outside of school for them to have access to challenging and age appropriate materials. It's no wonder why we are so behind other countries.
Horrible setting with very little structure. It's a shame, because I thought that we would have a good experience at South. Administrator is not involved enough and a lot of nonsense is going on. Many people are sending their children there from Queens, and unfortunately our tax dollars are rising every year. After 1 year, I pulled my daughter out and now have to spend additional money on private schooling. I would suggest to anyone moving into the area to find a private school or a new area.
While I'm sure the previous reviews did apply to the school during that time, I would not say the same about South High School today. There is a good handful of experienced, very helpful teachers, but many others come and go, usually because they are too incompetent to teach or because of cutbacks that result in them having to leave, which applies especially to the regents classes. Many of the administration's rules are superfluous and only enforced when it comes to impressing the Superintendent of schools (I've seen this firsthand and it makes me sick). The guidance counselors are helpful, when they're available. While the students are well-rounded and hard-working, I've seen a great deal of bullying occur in the halls, which are overcrowded and overpopulated, making it easy for these things to go unnoticed. The academic programs are taught to cover subjects tested on regents/AP examinations. If you want your child to be taught to the test and receive the best score they can, know that it leaves little room for free expression in class, such as debates/in-depth discussions. If your child is hardworking and participates in activities, they will do well at South.
This school has a fantastic educational staff. This includes music, art, and physical education.
The faculty and staff really care about the students and put in 200% of the effort that they need to.
This school is wonderful, The entire staff at this school works with the kids. The teachers inform you on a day to day basis, and the community and school spirit is great
This school is amazing. The teachers are so helpful to the students. The new principle is good and the staff makes the school more enjoyable.
This school is wonderful. The teachers and staff are on top of every students needs. They go the extra mile if your child is willing to participate. When the graduate they are prepared for college
My child has found a wonderful, diverse world in vshs. The teachers never let a student falter, guidance (and parents) are intensely involved with each student which is of utmost importance in a youngsters future endeavors, knowing adults are backing the efforts they make to succeed. The extra curricular activities are too numerous to name, and in the several years my child has attended so far, only one student issue (a fight involving only 2 kids) has occurred. The kids all know each other and they all seem friendly to each other, at least in school so far as I know. I would highly recommend vshs and it's surrounding community for a quality life and education.
There are a handful of good teachers, and the principal does not seem to have the desire to get to know the students. That aloofness makes it difficult to foster unity between the students with the higher order responsible for the adminstration related to their education.
This is a great school with a caring stuff and excellent courses and possibilities. The guidance department really guides and the after school programs are great. The best indication is our son's enthusiasm to get up every morning and hurry to get to school. The only thing this school is missing is a ESL program (English as a Second Language).
I do not think South High School is a great school like others say. I believe the rules are overdone and ridiculous. Half the teacher cannot teach at all and the principle is not a very good one. Thankyou.
Valley Stream South High School is an excellent suburban school with a wide range of activities, both academic and extracurricular. It has a large number of AP courses as well as an accelerated track and graduates go to top colleges. They have the full range of sports, music, art, service, academic clubs etc. They even have their own TV production studio. Students must volunteer time in service activities which has a character building outocme for students and an improved community for the recipients. The PTSA and Parents Club are involved and work closely with the administration on school improvements. The students genuinely like the school and are happy there which makes the parents happy as well. The school is walking distance for all, so no missing the school bus! The student body is diverse which allows the kids to be exposed to different cultures. The school's drawbacks are ouweighed by its pluses.
I highly recommend South HS as the staff there is dedicated to their students. The Attendance office is on top of every student making sure they are on time and where they are supposed to be. The staff treats parents with respect and consideration. Dr Lando, the principal, is A-1 as is Mr Caleca and Mr Peddle.
