My son has been with WHES for 2 years, throughout his venture, all I can say is it's been the worse experience not only for him but for me as a parent as well. There's little to no homework, the teachers do not seem interested in teaching, but only focus on behavior skills instead of academics. The principal and assistant principal does not come across as leaders of this school, which causes this school to be very unorganized. Should have researched further before moving into this district.
My children have been in West Haverstraw Elementary for two years. With the exception of my son's current 4th grade teacher, we have not had a good experience. To begin, fundraisers are pushed down your throat, what feels like once a month. I sat through a disorganized and poorly prepared 3rd grade chorus concert that made me embarrassed to have invited my family to. Neary Elementary provided instrument lesson, including violin starting in the 1st grade. When children move up to West Haverstraw those lessons are denied until the 4th grade. The principal and assistant principal seem to stress order and behavior over education. My 3rd grade daughter gets little to no homework. If you don't mind mediocracy this school in fine.
W. Haverstraw is an excellent school in so many ways. The academic programs are outstanding. The teachers are dedicated to helping every child succeed. The artwork that lines the hallways is just beautiful and the music that the students create brings tears to the eyes of the listener. Parental involvement is encouraged. The PTA has a strong, positive presence in the school and many parents volunteer to help during activitiees. This is an excellent school so send your children...you won't be disappointed.
As a first time parent of West Haverstraw Elementary School, I must admit I was very nervous having my daughter attend. I had heard how terrible the school was and that I should send her to private school. I cannot tell you how happy I am with the school. Th Principle and Vice Principle are absolutley WONDERFUL! They are fairly new to the school and have made a tremendous difference. They encourage parent involvement. When you are at the school, you feel like you are part of a big family. The Teacher's are also wonderful. They go out of their way to help out each child and work with you if there is a problem. I now have a child in the pre-K program and continue to be impressed with the school. I am a very involved parent and appreciate the willingness to be able to work in the classroom.
I love this school. The teachers go above and beyond their jobs. The Principals are always available for you.Grades 1-4 have gym 2x wk,art reading specialist, music 1x wk. They have a 45min block of reading each day. Small but active PTA.
