Both of my children have attended this school. Both were put in advanced classes, yet the work was still extremely easy for them. Yes the teachers are nice and the staff want the best for your child, yet the work is easy and my children were bored. At any honors assembly there would be too many students. One parent that spoke to me thought it was wonderful that so many students received honors, I thought it must be very easy to get honors if so many students are on the stage. My children went to private high schools and once they got there, they were behind their peers.

My son has absolutely excelled in his first year at this school. He came from one of the districts elementary schools where he was average to above average. The atmosphere there was always a bit down. The attitude of the middle school is so obvious when you walk in the door. It is all positive and it shows in the students and the teachers. Great experience so far and looking forward to the second year.

Both of my children went to West Middle for seventh and eighth grade and I have to tell you, we have no complaints. It is a great school to send your child. Every staff member is helpful including the principal and assistant principal, Mr. Graham and Mrs. Spitzer, along with the guidance counselor both my kids had, Mr. Larrs. The teachers are great! The academics are fantastic! The teachers will do anything and everything to make sure your child finds success. You can tell they want to help your kids. The gym, music, art, technology, sports, and clubs are great for your child to get involved in. There is great teachers and coaches to lead the way. The school is an extraordinary achievement. I do not have enough room to tell you how GREAT it is! If you send your child here, both you and your child will love it: 100%Guaranteed!

About the tests

Beginning in the 2012-2013 school year, the New York State Department of Instruction implemented new assessments designed to be aligned with the Common Core State Standards. The new standards for proficiency in these subjects are higher than in previous years and the percent of students earning a proficient score is expected to be lower as a result of this change. See this letter from New York's Commissioner of Education for more information on these changes.

In 2013-2014 New York used the New York State Assessments to test students in grades 3 through 8 in English language arts and math, and in grades 4 and 8 in Science. At present 2013-14 results are available only for English language arts and math. The tests are standards-based, which means they measure how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of New York. The goal is for 90% of students to meet or exceed grade-level standards on the tests.
