INTERMEDIATE

Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

I absolutely love this school, my oldest daughter graduated from Pearls and now my youngest daughter attends Pearls. I am very happy and satisfied with the learnings that each of my daughters have received and still receives from Pearls.

Pearls is a wonderful school. Mrs. Gorman, the pre-k teacher is sensitive and responsive to the children's needs. My son feels happy and cared for at Pearls.

I find this school to be absolutely horrendous. The students are very unpleasant, and the school its self has a terrible atmosphere. There is almost no motivation for students to learn and even though the school claims to be for the "gifted and talented" you are surrounded as a student with bad work ethic. If you are considering attending this school I can tell you that you would be making a mistake by going here.

In response to the young lady considering moving to Yonkers. First thing is, Yonkers is a school bus district. So, if you are living more than a mile or so from the school you are choosing for your child, you should be good with transportation. But, choose Pearls gifted. Keep in mind that your son needs to take an entrance exam, and I think you missed the sign up date to take that exam for the 2014/2015 school year. So, you might be stuck with putting him in another school for a year until you can have him all signed up for the test. Provided that he passes the test, Pearls is the only place to be!!! Now, living in Yonkers. Hmmm. You said that you have a son in college. No colleges in Yonkers! Mount Saint Vincent is right in the Riverdale section of the Bronx. It's right on the Yonkers border. Get the info on that school and take it from there. If you want to live in Yonkers, try the north or the east part of Yonkers, closer to the cross county shopping center or along that area. The great thing about Yonkers is that transportation is very easy and Yonkers is central to many areas. Don't live in 10701, 10705, part of 10704, and a small part of 10703. And, be careful of police!

My Son started in this school in September. He is so happy & he really has the best teacher, Muss Warrens. She is always advising us, and reminding us of events & homework etc. she is very funny tok which really helps the kids enjoy school & learning. I just came back from a brilliant Halloween Parade. So well organized, i was very impressed. The staff are always so helpful & friendly & the security is fantastic. Love love this school. Thank you Pearls for all you do for my son & the kids.

I am so happy that my kids are attending this school. You hear such terrible things about the Yonkers schools, but this is a real glimmer of hope. It's not perfect and there are always budgetary constraints- but for a pubic school in a highly urban area, it's fabulous. Love the teachers, love the diversity of the students. Do wish it were more progressive and they did not worry so much about tests, but this is the world we live in now.

Pearls is a good school. My daughters are happy and I feel secure when I drop them off at school that they are safe. My kids complain about the school rules but I know that it is for their own good. Hopefully we wouldn't have anymore budget cuts because nothing should be Cut when it comes to Education. Our childrens' education should be Top Priority since they are the Future.

I think Pearl School is not somewhere your child should be going, nor to use the GT program they offer. I do not think it offers a safe environment for any child because of the unfortunate locale.

Pretty good school, I've been going there since kindergarten and it WAS FUN and there use to be many activities to do such as cheer leading and different sports but because of the economy they are no longer there but I do appreciate that they have devolved a sports club... But as I got older different principals and more rules were created, and some are are just unnessiary and mean, we aren't allowed to sit with our friends during lunch and since I'm in the upper grades there is no recess so I practically never get to talk to my friends , thought they are many unruly rules and etc., I would suggest the school because it's fun once you gets use to the rules and I would continue going until 8th grade.

am the grandparent of a second grader at Pearls. I think that Pearls is a very good school, however, I am very unhappy that last year and this year the school hours have changed. I am not happy with the fact that my 7 year old grandson has to get up at 5:00 AM everyday to go to school, get on the school bus and travel at least 45 minutes to get to school. I think that this is too much for a 7 year old. What do you think?

Came in with mixed feelings since I heard so much about budget cuts and how they allegedly destroyed this school. The School is great so far. The Pearls PTA is amazing!!! I can't believe all of the things they do for this school. My child is in preschool and the administrators that I've dealt with have been good so far.

My two daughters attend PEARLS and its a fabulous school with very caring teachers and an active PTA. Only regret is that even with gifted and talented program the most gifted still get a bit left behind as they have to follow the NYS program.

I have been at this school for several years. In a district the size of Yonkers, you really need to compare individual schools to that of districts that you believe are "good" school districts. That said, this school is the only one in the district that competes well in all aspects with those in districts like Scarsdale and Bronxville and is better in some ways than Tuckahoe. Also, the Parent Involvement and PTA involvement along with dedicated administrators and staff make this school a phenomenal place to be! So glad we are here, wouldn't change it for anything!

This is the best public school that Yonkers has to offer. Unfortunately, they are so busy teaching to the test that they completely overlook quality of life for the children. When the art and music programs were cut, it was the final straw for me. The archaic curriculum does not serve the students and the pen, paper, copy until its perfect method did not sit well with me. My son had a wonderful year in kindergarten but was miserable in first grade. Perfection was praised above creativity. Children are not allowed to interact all that much. They sit at their desks and do worksheets all day long. I loved the diversity and wish his current school had more but I felt like I had no choice. I pulled my son out in the middle of the year. My daughter has been in the school for three years now. The programs are excellent, the teachers are good. The teachers work to bring every child on aboard not leaving anyone behind. And above all parent participation is amazing. This is a public school but run and managed like a private school. Kids are mostly well behaved. The curriculum could be challenging but if your kid is a rapid learner, this is a good place to provide educational activities and program to keep up and not slow them down.

WOW! I have been at Pearls ever since Pre-K... I absolutely love it!! I have made many, many friends....... however, I think (I am in 6th grade) the sixth grade teachers give a little too much homework... But otherwise..... I think if you are moving ti a new school and you live or are planning to live in Yonkers, NY...definetly TRY and enroll your child/children into this wonderful school.

I have lived here a long time and have had my children and know many parents of children in other Yonkers schools. The bottom line is that Pearls is absolutely the best choice for a Yonkers Public School Education, comparing to top rated nearby schools with much higher taxes.

Being upset about an issue isn't the same as rating a school. This site is based on a rating system, one which parents look to in finding a good school for their child. The bottom line is that it's a fantastic school with an amazing staff and extremely bright children, regardless where they came from. That is what matters. Take your gripes up with the board of ED!

Pearls, is the best public school in the Yonkers District. The dedication of the entire staff makes a wonderful environment for children to lean at the fullest of their capacities. I would like to see all the public schools teaching at the same level, given the future generation the tools to build a better Country. Thank you for the good work.

I don't understand how one can call it a gifted and talented school when all they do is hand pick the best and brightest students from other schools. The credit should go to the teachers that pushed and challenged the student who's now considered good enough for Pearls. A truly gifted and talented school should be able to take a struggling student and get the same results in which they require for entry.

When our daughter attend Pre-K (and the beginning of Kindergarten) at Pearls, we had a great experience! We felt that her teacher went above and beyond and got to know each student's strengths and weaknesses. Our daughter still talks about her teacher and her music teacher (both of whom are still there). When we left NY, our only regret was that we couldn't take the school with us to Washington state!!

I am currently enrolled in Pearls Hawthorne School and I am an 8th grader. I have been here since Pre-K and the experience was absolutely wonderful. The teachers are helpful, with many extracurricular activities and exciting field trips. The staff is warm and welcoming and the students are kind. I will definitely miss this school. For good memories, this is the school to choose!!

My daughter will start her 3rd year at Pearls soon. At first, I wasn't crazy about the pressure I felt was put on 5 year olds. I just have a different philosophy about education and want my daughter to enjoy her time at school (not just be at the top of the class). I will say that she is learning alot and is doing well. She had a great year in 1st grade. I think very involved parents are what makes this school the best public school in Yonkers. We definitely need a field or larger space for recess and outdoor gym.

The academic programs here are amazing! I just recently won the science fair and I say that it is due to the teaching quality. There are many extracurricular activities. There are cheerleading squads, basketball teams, and much more. My mom is deeply involved with most activities here, and I have to say, she says there are always so many parents. There are fathers too! I suppose all the parent involvement, extracurricular activities, and the academic programs make it the best school in Yonkers!

No school compare. Getting into PEARLS is like hitting the lottery. Parent and Grandparent involvement is the key here. No other school has what PEARLS has. Remember you get what you give and this school gives alot back.

This is the best public school that Yonkers has to offer. Unfortunately, they are so busy teaching to the test that they completely overlook quality of life for the children. They use a reading program that does not instill a love of reading in the children. There is no thought given to developing creative thinkers and a caring community. In fact, the children are not allowed to interact all that much. They sit at their desks and do worksheets all day long (or so it seems). My 1st-grade son already hates school! But the student body is terrific -- great kids of all races -- and parental involvement is a notch above other Yonkers schools. However, I'm looking to pull my son out after this school year ends.

The PEARLS program is tops. We do need more school-sponsored extra cirrucular education so that parents do not have to invest (time, $$$) in after school classes (gymnastics, karate, music, art, etc.) Parents also complain that since adding the middle school grades, the school has become somewhat militant. Kids are not allowed to run at recess, for ex. The school is maxed out population-wise and it shows in the administration's stress. The building is run down. No temperature control --all a function of the budget problems--not teachers and adminstration who are THE BEST!

This school focuses on academics and its effective. I was disappointed to see how parents are pushed out of the school in Pre-k whereas in private programs parent involvement and observation is encouraged in many ways more than just class trips. Extracurricular activities are almost nill through no fault of the principal but as a result of Yonkers' budget problems. The music program is good but each year the threat of the program being terminated looms over parents. If you are on a budget and cannot afford private school than this school is the way to go in comparison. Your child will be around other children whose family focus is on education as well. Unlike other Yonkers schools, there is a process to getting into this school which shows commitment on the part of the parents.

My son is currently enrolled in the Pearls school. Yonkers public schools mandate 40 books per year to be read; in the Pre-k level, they will have read that in the first 8 weeks. This is an amazing program that deserves attention and recognition. Pearls is a top school partly because of the parents involvement in the day-to-day of education. Parents are invited to take part in and help during the day.

This is a wonderfully enriched school with ethnic diversity, academically challenging for students and great parent/administrator participation. Pearls encourages students to advance themselves so they will be able to attend next year. I love this school and it certainly surpasses the typical Yonkers public school in every way.
