My daughter loves to go to school each day! She comes home and is so excited about all she has learned. Not only are the classroom teachers great, but the kids get great arts and environmental instruction!
I suspect that since a lot of the reviews for this school were made around the same date that the reviews are not genuine but rather a big push from the school to get parents (or staff) to write reviews. Evergreen in general is a safe place and children do learn, but it ends there. The parents are very cliquey. The majority of the teachers practice favoritism. The same kids are picked for everything EVERY SINGLE TIME. School plays, speeches, etc. Same kids. Diversity is talked about in the classrooms and touted as something that should be celebrated but it is not celebrated at this school. Kids are targeted by teachers and they are never given a chance to redeem themselves. Unless the child behaves like a little soldier obeying all commands silently they will be in constant trouble with the staff and the administration. The school pushes for parents to donate money every year which makes a lot of situations uncomfortable, such as being approached by teachers and being asked if you planned on donating this year. I feel that the "anonymous donors" who donate mega dollars every year are not so anonymous and their children receive preferential treatment. So do the children of classroom coordinators, staff members, and parents who are able to spend the majority of their time volunteering in the classrooms. I feel that evergreen needs a MAJOR overhaul of its school culture to make it what it appears to be to outsiders. It is not an inclusive community that values the creativity and unique personality of each child.
My daughter has really flourished at Evergreen. The EL learning model is a great fit for her, the teachers and staff are caring, flexible and dedicated, and the wide array of "extras" she is offered is amazing. Climbing wall, ropes course, gardening, cooking... there's something for every child.
My child was bullied mercilessly at this school for years, and the staff turned a blind eye. My child was too afraid to tell us, and it only became apparent when an escalated incident had to be reported to us. The school protects the bullies because it is easier than dealing with a systemic problem.
The best school in WNC hands down. What makes it number one is... a very caring and devoted group of teachers and administrators and a very hands on principal. The Eco friendly environment ia another plus.
The curriculum is great and puts students above the curve of public schools. They start cursive in kindergarten. The teachers are kind and bright. They teach out doors skills. However the staff does not always contact parents to assure that what they hear from the children is accurate and may take actions that are out of bounds. A change in staff would bring me back to this school.
Overall Evergreen is a great school if your child doesn't need EC services. The EC director at Evergreen does not put those kids first and does not make herself available to help parents know what is available for their children. Not even sure she knows. We took our child out of Evergreen due to her incompetence.
