This school accidentally locked my 3rd grader out twice in the last couple of months, which were cold weather days. On both occasions he walked around unsupervised for several minutes until reaching the front door where he was let back inside. The school failed to contact me in any way afterwards on both occasions and tried to hide what had occurred. This school also routinely brings in a white police officer to "talk" to very young kids who have exhibited a behavioral outburst. I personally witnessed a small African American child being spoken to in the office, which was very clearly intimidating as well as served to stigmatize this child. This is a really terrible school. Do not send your child here!
This is probably the most culturally diverse elementary school in Buncombe County and it is a beautiful thing to witness. As a PTO member and substitute teacher, I have seen how much the teachers, administration, and guidance counselor care about the success of the students. I am impressed by how creative the teachers are and make learning the fundamental subjects fun. The school also offers music and art and has a great computer lab. There is a 3rd and 4th grade after school chorus that performs concerts around the county. My child's last four years at Johnston Elementary have been a wonderful experience.
