Good school but your have to monitor your child's progress. I have volunteered there just to see what's going on. With 24 kids per class, the teachers can do so much. It's all up to the parents to make sure that homework is done and other projects is done.
We moved here from the New England area and I have to say I was concerned with the quality of public education in North Carolina, especially when compared to the schools up north... But I was happily surprised when I noticed how much my children were learning at Polo Ridge and how much more advanced their curriculum was than the one from their school in New England. My oldest child is now moving to middle school and I have to say that Polo Ridge prepared her very well for it! My youngest child still has 5 more years at Polo Ridge and I am very excited about all that she is going to learn there! The teachers have been wonderful and always available and I couldn't have asked for anything more. My children love this school!
If your child is high-achieving and highly self-motivated, they'll likely do well here. Then again, they'd likely do well anywhere. This school is obsessed with test scores to the point that actual education is sacrificed. Our child's fifth-grade year was comprised of reviewing for the EOGs. Furthermore, the school is run like a military academy, and I have never been in a school atmosphere where parents were so unwelcome (and perpetual building and reassignment meant our two children went to three elementary schools between them). With few exceptions, many faculty and staff treat parents like the enemy. Communication between faculty/staff and parents is nonexistent, and I say that as a former PTA board member. I am hugely relieved our family is finished with Polo Ridge and only hope our youngest (the one who attended PRE for two years) is prepared for middle school.
Polo Ridge has many opportunities for children to be involved...the top students that is. It is a school for high performers and those who fall in the middle or on the lower end of the curve will be left behind. Most of the educational needs and requirements of a struggling student are left to the parent, as the teachers will do the very basic in may cases. However, the high performing student will do well here. There are good teachers at this school, but during its first year, all of the teachers were good. Now, many of them have favorite students, and the others students are disregarded. Again, the good teachers are Really good but the bad ones should consider a new career. Even the kids talk about it. But, I guess you can't blame the teachers when the Principal isn't very friendly.
This school may look on on paper, but be observant of what goes on behind the scene.
I have very mixed emotions about this school. It is new and has a very challenging academic program. Shining stars will come out of this school. The PTA definately plays a big role here. We are fortunate. They will no doubt end up with a "10" rating because "it " all looks great on paper. However, it is all the intangables that are concerning. I see "middle of the road" kids are very much overlooked, except at EOG time :) Teachers, our experience was one GREAT and one no so great. The principal seems condesending and unapproachable. There is quite a breakdown in communication. Overall, I don't think this school should get more than three stars.
I think the teachers at Polo Ridge are excellent & truly care for the kids. They are dedicated professionals and that's why I'm giving the school 4 stars. The problem lies with the Principal who runs the school like a military camp. Parents are NOT welcome at this school but rather thought of as a nuisance. The main focus of the leadership of this school is getting the highest possible score on the EOG and keeping a "clean" record. While I'm all for a clean safety record, this school seems to think the only way to accomplish this is through rigidness & disrespect to the parents who are treated like criminals. My fear is that it won't be long before the great teachers are going to get sick of this environment & leave. Only time will tell.
The teachers at this school are wonderful. The principal is strict but caring. The PTA is fabulous at raising money and provides many opportunities for the children. We like the school but if I could change one thing, there is too much focus on testing & way too much homework & special projects which take away from our family times & just being a kid.
Polo Ridge is a very new, clean, motivated school. That being said this parent feels it needs to calm down a bit about proving itself. The uber competitive vibe intimidates some children. PTA sponsored Quarterly Ribbon Ceremonies are too much. Overall the staff seems genuinely concerned about strong teaching and achieving all testing goals. The students will be kept on track to succeed. Some superstars will be created by this school.
