Some teachers are highly unprofessional, they dress inappropriately with tight clothes etc, and they talk to the students inappropriately. Previous statements about not having open communication if correct, my child was involved in an serious incident at school and I never received one phone call or letter. If kids act up they kick them out of class with no supervision. Some insult them and wonder why the kids go off on them and several students have even accused teachers for being dishonest and rude. I work with kids every day, and have been impressed by the charter schools I visit in other counties. They have cameras in every classroom with sound and they encourage parent involvement. There s never a question about what happened, and with students and teachers being held more accountable knowing the cameras are watching them, incidents leading to suspensions are drastically reduced. That leaves teachers with more time to teach and less time with behavioral issues. I'm beginning to feel like the whole school system is outdated and needs to be privatized. It seems that charter schools can do so much more with the money and provide a higher level of education.
I had to remove my child from a different school because of bullying and enrolled him in DBMS. From day one both I and my child were very pleased with the school. Students as well as staff members were very welcoming and my child loves it. It's nice to know there are still passionate teachers out there who care about the well being of our children and not only the EOG scores.
My daughter goes to this school and she loves it, especially band. Mr. Starling is an awesome teacher!
My daughter attends DBMS and we have never had any problems with the teachers or adminstrators. This school has apparently come a long way since Mrs Alford has been there. This will be my daughters last yr there and I am glad they have such caring and supportive teachers. I have read the other reviews about the school uniforms and I know that they do enforce these rules.
I don't know whether any of the previous reviewers from 2007 have bothered to inquire about the progress of DBMS, but the facts and figures speak for themselves. As of the 2007-2008 school year, DBMS is now a high-growth school with exemplary leadership and teachers. The fact of the matter is that everything hinges on GREAT leadership. When this changed, the school dramatically improved in every area. Don't take my word for it. Check the facts!
I am a new teacher and heard a lot of bad things about DBMS and went into the job a bit nervous. The principal is incredible though and came determined to change the image of the school and raise the score. Hat off to MRs. Alford because I believe she certainly is doing the job. The staff is working hard and there is hardly a free minute for anyone. It is a tough job because many students seem to have inclinations toward negative behavior which can be attributed to many things. We work hard here and need more parent support (which is growing , not knocking it!). If we keep this trend up it will prove in time that this is an excellent school. A great school is made up by the whole community not just the school staff and students!
I'm a student at DBMS. In my opinion this school is a great choice. The new principle we have is almost like a mother figure to us students. The principle is very nice and listens to any problems or concerns. She was a former Principle at Ireland Drive, where many students attended before going to DBMS because they are right beside each other. She has a great education and cares for each and every child at school. And of course just like any other school DBMS has flaws too but trust me DBMS is Great. the Teachers are great also they have fun with the students but know when 'its time to get down to business' but as I said Before DBMS is Great and is a very good choice. Thank You
I'm a parent of DBMS and I am not pleased with the school. Our kids need people that are not only willing to hear but to teach and have positive way of teaching. The security is not acceptable either. I tried to get in touch with my daugther teacher and she never was available and never answered my email. We are seriously in the process of changing to another school. I feel sorry for the kids that go to that school
We have been so disappointed with DB Middle School on every level. The teachers are impossible to reach, the administration doesn't want to be bothered, and the students are treated like they are criminals (and act accordingly). We are selling our home and moving to another district...that is how bad it is.
well all I got to say is I was a student at byrd till I moved but this school is the best I ever been to.
I'm a student at Douglas Byrd and I think it a very good school to go to.
Our family did not find this school to be up to par for our eighth grader. It was very hard to contact anyone with questions about his progress. He had special needs and we do not believe that those needs were met in any way. they are constantly 'on lock down' so they are missing important classes. they have 'uniforms' but no one inforces this so while i was making my son follow the rules he was being made fun of for not breaking them! i am very happy to be moving so my son will no longer be a part of this school!
I had both of my kids go to this school. His team was the best team in the school, Majestic Runners. However, they lost all of their good teachers. Mr. Anaheim was the best math teacher and really taught the kids and was a leader on his team. Discipline is a problem as far as a whole school is concerened. I see the school going downhill and wish that they keep their good teachers.
To survive in this school you must have strong values and morales instilled in your children for the working area. My opinion is that this school deserves a better reputation than it has. The teachers and principal do whatever it takes to make this school a better enviroment for the staff and students. If you are considering Byrd for your child's education also know that every school has its flaws and every school has its better points. Dont be discouraged by what others may say about this school, its reputation has long been proven wrong, especially now that there is a new principal. Just give it a try and like most of the students here at Byrd you will be happy with your results. -Douglas Byrd cheerleader
I'm a student at Douglas Byrd and I like this school alot but like other schools it has its problems. I like the fact that at Douglas Byrd if you need to talk to someone there is always Mrs. Miller and Coach Walker. Mr. Walker is a awsome Drama teacher.
I'm not a parent but I am a sophmore student who does attend Douglas Byrd High School for my second year and I think that Douglas Byrd has come a long way from what it was when my sister's and my mother went there. Change takes time and even though I don't agree on everything the new pricipal does I do realize that everything she does is for a reason and as far as discipline and behavoir goes I think that it has definitely changed for the best! And I'd also like to tell these parents that has had these one time experiences with Byrd that it has changed and you shouldn't always judge something on a first impression becasue I love Byrd and I wouldn't want to go to any other school despite of it's little faults!
This school is a wreck. I didn't even know who was the principal. She's never there and she never follows through on anything. The front desk is a nightmare. The case manager over Special Ed. was a liar. I had an IEP meeting where she said that my child has reached his peak who is she to say this she ain't no psychologist. If no child is to be left behind, then don't send them here. The school is a joke and has quality teachers but you can tell that they are young and kids walk the hallways allday long. Principals and teachers have no control over them. The students run the school. Pay for a private school but don't live in the area so your child will not have to go here.
To sum it all up, the night my daughter and we attended the school when they had open house for the new upcoming students to receive their bus numbers, schedules, etc. The one teacher talked to the group of parents as if we were delinquents and parents of delinquents, basically yelling. I for one have a straight A graded child and was very upset at their attitude to treat every child as if they are going to be a terrible student. The band teacher was the only caring teacher I had met during the two years she attended. We moved to Harnett County to get away from Cumberland County schools, they really are terrible. Daughter's clarinet was stolen, and principal lied to us that the PTA would replace and then never did and said she never made that promise.
