I graduated from Gaston Day in 2002 and was fully prepared when I attended college. Before attending Gaston Day, I went to another Independent School and it was not living up to what was promised--hence me going to Gaston Day. I am still in contact with teachers and fellow classmates from my time there. The school is a safe and caring place that will push you in ways you did not know existed. I am a better adult because of my time at Gaston Day and it spurned my interest to be a teacher myself. I would highly recommend Gaston Day to anyone. The facilities are beautiful and the teaching is top notch and it is only going to get better.
As a Gaston Day Alum, I can say I whole heartedly enjoyed my nine years at GDS. Its combination of great academics and outstanding athletics certainly are impressive, but what sets GDS apart in my mind is the faculty and staff who truly are invested in every students well-being. I can honestly say that I had some of the most caring teachers who I still keep in touch with five years later. GDS values the whole student and truly prepares every student for college and beyond. If you are looking for a place where everyone knows your child's name and is invested not only in their education but also their overall well-being then GDS is the perfect place.
When choosing a school for our children 18 years ago, we decided to invest in our children's future. It's been a fantastic investment in character development, study skills, college preparation and global consciousness. Our older son is now a senior at UNC Chapel Hill, a double major in Finance and English, president of the Kenan-Flagler undergrad business school's Marketing Club and a Director of their Finance Society; he studied Mandarin in Beijing, interned in NYC. He's interviewing for jobs now; he's been flown to Jax, Florida and now Santa Monica, California by interviewing firms. He will tell you that he was fully prepared for the rigors of successful college academics. Our younger son is a senior at Gaston Day this year where his teachers and counselors are assisting him as he makes college choices (UNC, USC, Duke, NYU) and prepares for interviews and applications. But they don't do the work for him; they are there as resources and to guide in his journey. The school encourages the students to try new opportunities and discover the best within them. At Gaston Day, it's "cool" to be smart and prepare for college! We are grateful every day that we chose Gaston Day!
Gaston Day provided a wonderful school experience, I was a student there for 10 years and let me just say that it is the best education I could have imagined. Now that I'm in college I use lessons I learned at GDS every day in my classes and in my social life. Thanks to Gaston Day I have wonderful memories of grade school and I am making fantastic memories in college.
My wife and I love the new direction of the upper school. Kudos Mr. Rainey! The school is in great hands.
Our family has nothing but great things to say about Gaston Day. Rigorous academics, fantastic teachers and strong leadership are just a few of Gaston Day's strengths. Our children love the close knit environment. We have watched our children become independent, compassionate, learned and well-rounded while at Gaston Day. Choosing Gaston Day is one of the best decisions we have ever made.
Gaston Day could be a great school. For the most part, the teachers are kind, compassionate, and hard-working. However, administrators make curricular and academic decisions in order to placate delusional parents. The school fears the loss of their paying student population, most of whom are truly just above average students at best. Purporting to be the highest performing prep school in the region is really no feat when you consider careful analysis of local SAT scores including socioeconomic factors that would contribute to depressed public school scores. GDS uses lots of buzz words and lots of spin, but little actual substance. Also, I am fairly certain that a few of these posts testifying to be parents are actually school administrators. The writing style is very obvious.
Gaston Day School is increasingly developing a reputation for tolerating bullying in the school. While the school has traditionally had a reputation for academic excellence, the behavioral problems tolerated by school leaders have resulted in a very different public opinion in recent years. We are one of several families to remove children from the school due to this concern. The curriculum is of little benefit to a child who is afraid in the classroom.
Vanderbilt, Davidson, Washington and Lee, UCLA, Boston University, St. Lawrence, and William and Mary do not sound so shabby to me! These are a few of the schools to which this year's graduates were accepted! I know quite a few of these graduates as they are good friends of my own children....who, by the way, successfully completed their educations at Gaston Day and were accepted to attend prestigious colleges. Additionally, the preparation given these young people, both in academics and in life skills/character development, is far and away better than anything they could get anywhere else in the vicinity. As a parent, I can say wholeheartedly that the tuition dollars spent at Gaston Day were the best investment I have made in my children's futures! My children were unbelievably prepared for the rigors of college, and oftimes stated that others in their midst were completely dazed by college work. Gaston Day, keep up the good work!! You are a gem!
My two children both graduated from Gaston Day School. Although neither one of my children attended and Ivy, I will say that they did attend highly selective schools and both received substantial scholarships, something our entire family appreciates and something the Ivy's do not provide. Both of my children were able to earn extra money in college as tutors thanks to their Gaston Day School foundation. I would hope that folks are not so narrow minded to assume that an undergraduate Ivy education is going to be a golden ticket for anyone. Gaston Day prepares students for success. I don't for a second regret the tuition I paid to Gaston Day.
As a parent of a recent graduate, I think it's an unfair characterization of Gaston Day School to suggest that the value of a private school education is related to a list of colleges. Our daughter was accepted into two prestigious colleges, but my wife and I simply couldn't afford the tuition. It's very elitist to base a child's success on acceptance to an Ivy League school. Because of GDS, my child was given the support and instruction to achieve national recognition in her writing. She made great friends and was able to intellectually engage in a way that I find unmatched amongst her peers at other schools.
I was a student at GDS for 13 years and adored it. As an alumni, I am constantly welcomed back with open arms. Every teacher really took the time to make sure you understood the material, especially after hours. The level of trust and respect at the school is unlike any else. While the work load is intense, nothing else could have prepared me for the amount of work at college. GDS makes it easy to be involved in all aspects of the school. I was a 3 sport athlete and performed in the school's musical. The small community is really more of a family. GDS was the perfect fit for me.
My son has attended Gaston Day for 8 years, and he loves this school. I have watched my son grow into a responsible, respectful and caring person. Over the years, his teachers have helped him strive to reach his full academic potential while nurturing his athletic and music skills. I am confident that my son's experience at Gaston Day will pave the way for his successful future.
I have two children who have attended Gaston Day. My son attended for 5-years before deciding to transfer to the local high school in Gastonia. I attribute his success in college to his years at Gaston Day. My son's organization skills and learning patterns benefitted from the Learning Academy at Gaston Day. In lower and middle schools he learned to manage himself and maximize his abilities. My daughter has stayed at Gaston Day for high school and has surprised us with the strength of her SAT scores. By staying at Gaston Day, she is much more prepared for college than my son was. In public school very few students who take AP classes actually take the AP Exams. Due to lack of preperation by the teachers, they are told not to take the exams. Thus no college credit, just a high school GPA boost. At Gason Day, my daughter was well prepared and encouraged to excel. With roughly 500 students in grades Pre-K through 12, I believe that Gaston Day offers more diversity for a school its size than most. Both cutural diversity and diversity in academic ability. I highly recommend it for parents who have students of all abilities.
This past week the list came out of where the recent grads are going to college. You would be disgusted to know after spending over 150k on your child's education, no one went to an Ivy League school? Some kids even went to local community colleges ( nothing against that but they could have done that going to public school and not a prep school). Sure some went to unc chapel hill, furman, Michigan state and Boston university but that's about it!
I am a former student who found the administrators and teachers oppressive of new ideas.
I went to public schools around Gaston County from kindergarten through middle school. Every school was the same: the students hated being there and the teachers hated teaching there. When it came time to pick a high school, my parents decided to send me to Gaston Day School. I can honestly tell you that it was the best choice my family has ever made. Yes, Gaston Day has its problems: the drama level is increased due to the small size and there are some politics between those in higher income homes versus those in lower income homes. HOWEVER, I have never been in a community more passionate about learning than when I was there. The teachers all express love for their field of study and convey that love to their students. The school became my home and the teachers and staff became my family. When I needed help, they were there. When I simply needed someone to talk to, they were there. Now that I am a college student, I realized that I not only learned the subjects, but I learned how to properly study. I can not express in words how grateful I am to Gaston Day for the success I have had. Gaston Day is the best option for any student and do not let anyone tell you otherwise.
I was accepted to Gaston Day School as a freshman in 2008 and I am a recent graduate of the class of 2012. First thing s first, GDS is not perfect. There were all kinds of issues with politics and administration when I was there, and I m sure there are still plenty to talk about. However, there is NOTHING that can outweigh the value of having four solid years with some of the most passionate and knowledgeable teachers in the southern region. GDS wasn t just my high school, it was my home. The teachers and staff, they were my friends and family. If you re looking for a challenge, an adventure, a place where you really do have the ability to explore the intellectual world, Gaston Day isn t the only option, but it s certainly an excellent place to start. Let me give you the best advice anyone will ever give you as a parent. If your child manages to get accepted and you can feasibly find a way to afford tuition. Do it. I promise you that you won t regret it. There may be some frustrations along the way, but in the end, if your child works hard and allows the faculty to impart their knowledge upon him or her, Gaston Day school will undoubtedly change your child s life.
This place is underrated. I spent 12 years at Gaston Day School and I can't say that there were not times that I wished I had attended a different school. I can say that I applied to many well known boarding schools in the north east and was accepted, but I stayed at Gaston Day. I will never regret it. I am now a graduate of a prestigious university and am gainfully employed. The education I received put me at the top of my class and the college counselor was a knowledgeable ally during the application process. Teachers come and go. Students do the same. Gaston Day always provides an excellent staff of teachers that care for and challenge the students. Some students cannot handle it and that's too bad. Everyone can't be an academic fit. This isn't a public school we are talking about. Now GDS has 4 buildings offers services to help with learning difficulties, and it is safe! The athletic teams do well and the art department rakes in awards every year. If you can afford a better education for your child you ought to invest in a Gaston Day School education. If I still live in the area when I have children, there is nowhere else I would consider sending them.
As a parent I was dissapointed in what was provided and dissapointed in what my child endured socially and academically. The nightly flow of tears from my child due to stress from teachers and some students was heart wrenching. The letters removing my child from activities due to low grades was the last straw. No way to HELP build confidence, more shame does not encourage anyone. I rate 2 stars.
