Unfortunately this school care much more about their perception than the actual children that attend. The lack of leadership at this school is abundant and clear. While the concept is great in theory, it lacks the basic progression for the average student and focuses more importance on the children of the very wealthy (donors). Theories don't teach children, teachers due and unfortunately the weakness at NGFS is in the teaching and staff member involvement.
School continues to lack the basic physiological and safety policies and procedures needed in any system for real learning to occur. There is no hot lunch and student almost burnt the building down (wouldn't school's insurance company love to hear about that?). School wants to be Greensboro Day but doesn't provide the opportunities, equality and systemic structure that better schools have. If you check out the schools attended by graduating seniors, it's the same as any other public school in North Carolina. No real opportunities for the price you pay. Also administration caters to two groups-major donors and scholarship students. Missing the boat with the middle of the road PAYING constituents. Beware if you have a special needs student-school has a history of avoiding/ignoring IEPs and individualized learning.
I have worked in and have seen a lot of public and independent schools, and NGFS ranks among the very best schools in North Carolina. First, their curriculum is top-notch. You will not find another school in Greensboro that has a curriculum that is as well-rounded. Students regularly engage in 21st century skills, including critical thinking, creative problem-solving, collaboration, and development of independent thinking. Their drama and arts program is fantastic. The writing instruction is phenomenal. Students' individual gifts are celebrated and nurtured, and they are appropriately challenged. I have two children who have attended this school for 5 and 7 years respectively. Both children are strong academically and well adjusted socially, and I credit the school with cultivating their gifts. My children LOVE going to school everyday and are given tremendous leadership opportunities and enrichment. They feel cared for and challenged by their teachers and by the curriculum. The experiential learning is threaded throughout the school day, as are the values of empathy, peace, integrity, community, equality, and stewardship. NGFS is one of the best kept secrets in Greensboro.
new garden friends school is an amazing place! our daughter has been there since pre-school and is now in 4th grade. i can honestly say that she would not be the outgoing, kind, inclusive, and confident girl that she is without the guidance and support that she received from the exceptional staff at ngfs. the school is strong in academics and the social curriculum is like no other school in the area. the students gain so much through service learning projects and the many field trips that they go on. i value experiential learning. one of the most special things about ngfs is the fall and spring trips that the students go on. our daughter is already looking forward to the 6 day spring trip that she will go on when she gets to 5th grade!
Some bright spots: good teachers who embody the qualities they advertise, low student to teacher ratio, excellent sports opportunities for all and great fine arts program. Unfortunately school is going through leadership changes which is currently causing growing pains and policies and customer service is getting lost in the process. As former students indicated, bullying is an ongoing problem even for such a small school, currently no hot lunch is available, scheduling and communication are problematic and there is still no security at the school. Also no choice in classes for middle school in terms of electives-schedule is given to you. No worse but no better than public school.
After having lunch with friends whose children attend other independent school in our community I realize, again, what a gift NGFS is to our family. They were discussing how there kids were afraid to speak to a teacher about a tough problem. They were atraid to ask this adult for help- a teacher!? I am so glad that my children are honored for themselves, they have confidence when speaking to adults and peers, and they excel at being exactly who they are- normal kids. What a relief to know they can be themselves in a environment that challenges and teaches them everyday.
My children were both victims of bullying at other schools. The Quaker values and educational style were great fits for them. The culture of the school is the most tolerant and caring I've ever encountered. The student body is incredibly diverse. There are kids from many different countries. There are also students from many different cultures and faiths. The faculty and educational offerings are top-notch. The new Arts & Athletic Center is a great facility. I wish it had been completed when my kids first started. I have recommended this school to several friends and many of these placed their children there.
NEW GARDEN FRIENDS SCHOOL is fantastic! I cannot say enough wonderful things about this school. The best way to experience the magic of New Garden Friends School is to come see it for yourself. It is difficult to describe the feeling of peace and happiness I have always felt sending my child to New Garden Friends School. He loves going to school each day!
Teachers really know their students. And it's not just because the ratio is low, they seem to really like what they do and enjoy being around children! My kids attended New Garden from preschool to high school, and their level of reading, public speaking, community involvement, and especially ability to think for themselves is just thrilling to me. For a struggling & concerned single parent, this school has been a godsend to me.
Since switching to NGFS from another private school, my daughter has become a completely different child! She now LOVES school, and has a level of self-confidence I truly never thought I'd see in her. It is so wonderful to be in a place where being smart and inquisitive is a good thing, not something to be made fun of. I have seen no acts of bullying whatsoever, and the teachers all know the kids so well. They respond quickly to parent concerns, and ALSO teach the kids the values they need to work out conflicts. My daughter is in middle school, but is doing much higher level work, with ample opportunity for honors projects as well as true community service and a social curriculum that cannot be beat. She is learning to love to learn, not just rote facts to repeat on a standardized test. We are thrilled that NGFS also offers a top-level high school program, where the students truly have a voice, as well as the chance to be academically challenged as they prepare for college. I highly recommend this school!
NGFS is a school where children are more important than scores. Success is determined individually rather than by standards. NGFS loves the students and the students love the school!
have been threatened by the administration since we arrived that our children might not be allowed to attend the school...even with a signed contract. Bullying has occurred and the root causes have not been addresed. There is an attitude that "kids need to learn to stand up for themselves" instead of teachers monitoring and intervening
I LOVE NGFS! I have just been going there for 2 years and everybody is really friendly. I have made many friends. They take care of drama and bullying as soon as a student or parent tells someone. They can't help if you don't tell them. Kind teachers, honors classes in Middle School, and an amazing heads of school!
NGFS teaches a love for learning not learning to make higher grades. They emphasize community service and a respect for all students regardless of age, race, Religion or political affiliation.
This school was recommended to me by my pediatrician as one that excels in the social and emotional development of the child. My daughter is currently a student there. I highly recommend it to anyone that prioritizes a nurturing, peaceful and academically stimulating environment for their child. The values of environmental stewardship and tolerance are truly and well integrated into the program.
Acts of bullying are ignored because they pretend they are all just getting along.
This is a great school! There are no violence and because of the small community the classes are fun and exciting.
First of all there doesnt have to be any sercuity at all because nothing violent happens at the school because most of everybody at that school is like 'rainbows and unicorns'. Unlike public schools were there is violence because of non-hometrained igorant children at this school there's peace, equality, and care for the students. I'm in the 8th grade and is a African-American student going to this almost all white school and loves it because we get to do things that other schools cant do because they dont have the trust for there students.
As a parent, I do believe there are many great qualities about this school. The K-2 is the best for nurturing. The 3-4 definitely needs some review and more positive influences. The 5-middle are also great. The school provides little computer skills for the children although they have a computer lab. This is a great concern. There is also a diconnect between the Heads of School and what is actually going on in the classrooms. They are not very proactive in change that needs to take place and are many times slow to react to problems that may involve teachers or faculty. As a Quaker school, they do need to uphold the beliefs behind their roots but they also need to remember these children are going to be in a competitive world where college acceptance and the job market is tough. Another concern...no security on campus AT ALL!
An absolutely terrific school. Our 2 boys have been there from kindergarden through 5th grade and we are very pleased with the school overall.
