I keep hearing how great New Salem Elementary is supposed to be, but we had to pull our daughter out of the third grade at New Salem due to bullying. We addressed our concerns with her teacher and the administrators repeatedly but the issue was never adequately addressed and the bullying continued unabated. Our daughter suffered academically and emotionally because of it, so we finally took her out of school and have had to homeschool and/or pay for private school for her ever since. It stinks to have to pay taxes to support a school we can't even send our kid to. New Salem may be good academically but it was not a safe environment for our child.
The reason my husband and I moved to the New Salem area was because of the wonderful school and supportive community. The staff is committed to delivering a challenging academic program K-5. The students are provided extra help during the school day and as needed after regular school hours.
The staff at New Salem is very dedicated to providing a high quality education to all students. The PTO is very involved and a wonderful resource. This is a positive environment for all!
I am a retired teacher who taught for 36 years. I currently have 2 Grandsons at New Salem and 1 Grandson who is a New Salem graduate now attending Piedmont Middle School. I can't praise New Salem Elem. School enough! Mr. Drye, his teachers and staff have made New Salem a school of excellence and one which my Grandsons look forward to attending daily! Three cheers for New Salem Elementary!
This might be fine for regular students, but not for students that have special needs like ADHD. The teachers in k, 1, and 2nd seem knowledgeable, but put one students learning over another. My child is failing in Math and they won't give him extra help, because there are other students doing worse then him and they have enough students for mentoring Monday and don't want to make it larger. The music and art programs seem to be adequate as does the extra activities after school. They need great improvement in how they handle kids with special needs, there is just no program guidelines set up for their education.
I think new salem is the best school around and I am soooooooo glad my grandchildren attend it.
