This school has teachers with good personalitys, however my 2 kids have gone to this school 3 years and ive had alot of trouble with getting my kids on the bus after writing notes to the teachers. Its been with 3 different teachers at that. I think this school is too over loaded with kids to the point teacher cant even do there jobs!!! This year me and a teacher have had lots of promblems with my child bringing home homework and writing it down...i get 1 or the other but never both. We've tried working this out but it still continue........
I am a parent volunteer, have had children in this school for the past 6 years and have really seen a change from good to not so good. For the most part, I think the teachers are good and try to do their best but get little support from administration, which is very detached it seems from school itself. The principal seems cold and distant and not very approachable, a complete opposite from the the principal that was there when we started and the affects of this type of administration ripple throughout the entire school in morale and overall feeling about the school. Most teachers are excellent and try to do the best they can with what they have to work with. The school is also getting very overcrowded, lunchtime is a madhouse, the back looks like a trailer park but still, one of the better schools in Wayne County.
We used to love this school. A new administration came in during 2008, and it appears that teacher morale has plummeted. The new administration is also very detached from parents. My kids have been very fortunate to have excellent teachers; however, we're been apprehensive every time a new year school comes around. As a parent volunteer, I've seen many teachers who are skating by. Maybe my standards are too high, but every educator should be excellent.
School has great teachers and staff but it has become overcrowded. The school is no longer a School of Excellence and it shows.
The best Wayne County, NC public elementary school. School of Excellence 2004, 2005, 2006. School of Distinction 2007. New Principal began in 2007/2008 school year, Mrs. Theresa Cox who had previously served at Northwest and knows the school well. The school acquired 88 new computers this year for its computer lab which allows students to explore and learn different areas in technology. Teachers receiving awards in 2007/2008 include: Maggie Keaner Beginning Teacher of the Year & Wayne County Teacher of the Year Marcie Huf Teacher of the Year Connie Cox Instructional Assistant of the Year
I am really impress with Northwest School. The teachers treats the kids as if they were their own kid. You can't say enough of Mr. Wingate. I have never been to another school where the pricipal know every kid by thier first name and knows the parents of each kid. I would recommend this school to every kid that moves to wayne co.
Northwest Elementary has been a 'School of Excellence' recipient for many years. The combined efforts of staff and parents along with the children make this possible. The parents are always in the loop and are provided the necessary information to know what is going on. Parents are encourage to participate in field trips, school functions and as tutors. If you ever attend one of the many programs that the children put on each year you will find that the seats fill quickly and there is usually only standing room left if you arrive less than 15 minutes early. Mr. Wingate gives the word Principal a whole new meaning by truly being a PAL to each child. You can not go wrong with this school environment, that not only has the support of the parents, but the entire community too.
Our children have received an exemplary education at Northwest Elementary School. Our daughter was well prepared for the curriculum at the middle school and our son is entering his final year at Northwest. We have experienced teachers who design challenging lessons, an assistant principal who respects the students and champions their successes, and a principal who reaches out to each student individually (and knows their names!)
northwest elementary school is a wonderful school. i would recommend it to everyone i know. it is one of the few schools in north carolina that has achieved the school of excellence for the past couple of years. it is unusual for a prinicipal of a school containing almost 700 students to know each one by name. the staff will strive to make sure those that need extra help receive it. i myself have volunteer on several occasions in helping children who do not speak english to better comprehend the english language. it is a school i would recommend for all.
