Profile Completeness

ADVANCED

Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

Scurlock is a great school with a great staff. They are the most hardworking people I know. The school has a great positive environment. The best school in Hoke County!

As a parent of a child at Scurlock I have had so many amazing experiences watching my child grow as a Bear. Yes the school is older, yes the layout seems concerning, but but the teachers and staff give 100% of themselves to the students at Scurlock. Any time I have had an issue or concern it had been addressed quickly and efficiently. School events are fun, educational and engaging. I am proud to have my daughter at Scurlock.

Did you hear the news? The Hoke County Commissioners gave the school board money for renovations at Scurlock! The cafeteria and cafeteria restrooms are almost finished! There's new windows and air conditions being installed, too. The Bear Campus is going to look so good after all of updates. Thank you, Hoke County Commissioners, for what you have given to our students, their families, and the Scurlock staff!

Scurlock Elementary School is a school that knows how to to work exceptionally well with students and they expand on methods to do more with less. Don't be fooled by the outside, or the location, because all students at Scurlock are loved, taught with excellence and achievement in mind and all of their students show growth every year. Scurlock Elementary School prides itself on providing a positive, engaging, and loving teaching environment that reaches EVERY CHILD. For those of you that have posted negative comments about Scurlock, I suggest you spend some real time with the faculty, staff and students before you judge them. Scurlock Elementary School is a wonderful school with dedicated and caring teachers that go infinitely beyond the realms of their jobs to teach children. They spend countless hours after school, at home and during their personal time to work for their children. Scurlock teachers spend their own personal funds to supply students with the tools they need to succeed and thrive. I have seen and witnessed this kind of dedication many many times. Scurlock Elementary School loves our kids and we should show more support to them.

I can admit the school defiantly needs a face lift ( being a title 1 school you would think more money would be their to fix it up). I have had 3 of my children attend this school, I've never had any negative interactions with the principal or the staff. I will say, the teachers that my children have had so far have been exceptional. I would like to see the school look better than it is so more parents would stop taking their kids out and running to surrounding schools.

Hoke County has Scurlock Elementary School in its district. This is the worst school I have ever seen. Having been across the US and overseas, I have never witnessed a school that gives it student all A's and B's then says that the student will be retained in the 3rd grade due to a test. The school was asked in the beginning of the 2013/14 school yr to test the student for reading problems but the teacher and principal both said it was not their responsibility. When parent had testing done, school refused to acknowledge the disability (Irlen Syndrome). Look it up, it is real but my grandson now is told he must redo 3rd grade because plans were already in motion for him to leave the state the day school got out. I would never recommend anyone move into this school district.

I would rate this school a zero if I had the opportunity. The location is more than scary, the teachers are a joke with very few exceptions, and the principal does not take concerns seriously and talks about other parents which I find to be very unprofessional. The school board is equally dismissive and will not try to help you at all. I cannot wait to move out of this county! Please do not send your kids to this school. If you don't believe the low reviews just look at the test scores...

I regret not checking out this school before we moved here. Lets start with appearance. For one it's an open campus in the ghetto. People can just walk onto the campus and nothing is said to them. When it;s nice out, open campus is ok but when it it is raining, cold, windy, etc the kids have to go outside to move from building to building. Everything here is a fundraiser, but watch out for that. We have had order forms and money disappear never to be seen again. We have also had my sons lunch card charged numerous times by other kids. Education- subpar. I can't even tell when my son is learning about and I do communicate with the teacher. He is failing numerous classes because of his teacher being gone and the school not properly filling in for her.The principal is of no help even though I had numerous meeting with her and she never showed. We have had a few good teacher but the school can't seem to keep them. And if you try to transfer to a better school, good luck.

This is hands down the worst school I have been involved with. I have a child with Autism and they placed in a class with a teacher who had no experience with special needs kids. The principal is ill informed on school procedures concerning IEPs and field trips, and the Superintendent is considerably less than knowledgeable and unwilling to respond to inquires promptly. Also, the principal is largely absent in all matters regarding the school overall.

Scurlock Elementary School has the best students in Hoke County! We had a wonderful parent night called Reading Under the Stars. The campus was turned into a campsite for Camp Read-A-Lot. It was awesome!

I also disagree with the earlier statement. My daughter has thrived. The school is old and isn't in the best area in Raeford, but the teachers are passionate and dedicated to their kids. They do the best they can with the funding they get. There were a few rough patches at times, but what parent doesn't have rough patches with the school. They were addressed and worked out successfully. They engage the kids, encourage multi-cultural activities, lots of fun PTO sponsored activities, and generally try to involve the parents as much as possible. I did have some frustrating conversations with the principle that I felt got no where at first, but then would find that the matter had been handled. I cannot say enough about the teachers. They work hard and really try to draw the best out of their students. They have a diverse audience in this school so it can be challenging at times - but they do their best with consideration for the students and parents. While I wouldn't give it 5 stars because of the location and age of the school, this is not an issue that can be fixed. Raeford is not a rich school district. But they do the best they can with what they have and love their kids.

They lost my child refuse to take responsibility and my child has only been attending this school since march 2013 at Scurlock and this was the third and last straw i will not wait around for a fourth but don't expect the superintendent or anyone else in the school board to do anything about this problem school. If you have a choice go else where, something needs to be done about this school and maybe they will do it if there is not one attending their school.

I disagree with the previous comment. This school exceeded way my expectations. I can imagine what your son and you must have gone through and this was one incident! But overall I experienced the complete opposite. Teachers do care a lot and it is all a matter of communication as in every where you go. I agree that the program for disabled children is not very well planned out on that school, but as far as the rest, this school will surprise you. It has way more to offer than you think. Teachers will work with your child on their level. And you need to do your part as a parent! My daughter went to school there and I could have not been happier with the teachers and the staff and the principle! They are wonderful people. They will work with you and do everything in their power to help. It is the parents that really dont put much effort a lot of times and the communication between teacher is very important to help your child to succeed. We were very happy on that school!

I love this school. I was sad that we had to PCS! I have a child that is often misunderstood because he is gifted. I am not just saying that...I have a psychological report to back it up. There is a difference between a bright child and a gifted child.. Anyhow, Scurlock truly understood how to work with my child. I pray for any of you who have gifted children. It is not easy...Often times some adults do not know how to work with them and they get in trouble a lot. However, I did not have that problem here. Loved it! You will love it too! Excellent teachers, strong principal, and challenging academic program!

The teachers at this school do the best they can with what they are given. They are wonderful. The Principal is also lovely. Our government has ruined our school system. Scurlock does the best I've seen from any school in the area with the monies they DO have. This school is in a poorer area, looks a bit rough. However, I do love the teachers my children have had, and enjoy the after school programs offered. The school system nurses need some help though... (She's a NICE lady...)or need to take some refresher courses on quite a few things before they should be back in the school in charge of medicating students.

When I attended here, I was well beyond the school's curriculum. I admit I felt like a genius here, but I know full well that I was not. The school seems just as bad as it ever was back then after reading these reviews. Some parents either have no choice or couldn't care less and that's why you have schools like Scurlock.

I love Scurlock! I have 3 daughters and they all attend this school. I even pulled my oldest daughter out of one of the "better" schools in Hoke Co because she needed extra help in math and the "better" school did not have assistance for her. Scurlock spends their funding dollars wisely by providing tutoring and extra help for kids who need it. If you ask anyone in Raeford, that is actually from this area, they will tell you that Scurlock is the best elementary school in Hoke Co. Keep up the good work Scurlock!

Scurlock is a great school. I'm sad that my daughter will not be able to go to Scurlock next year due to military moving. Teachers are great and care about the students. My daughter has been there for 3 years and her reading and math skills are above grade level. The school has made a lot growth in the past few years. Stop judging a book by its cover.

Scurlock is a caring and welcoming school. My son attended and he was very well prepared for middle school. Scurlock has a lot of great teachers and a lot of technology. My son loved this experience at Scurlock.

I think Scurlock has some good teachers. I believe the principal needs to work on her attitude.I have requested conferences with her and she did not show up. I also noticed that some of the teachers that work next door to her office are constantly sitting and talking to her when I come to the school. The last two years the same teacher has received Teacher of the Year(strange). I have seen alot of favortism displayed by the principal.

Both my daughters went to this school. I didn't like that the principal didn't help us when my daugther had a problem with her teacher. This school rating is a 1. It doesn't deserve it.It should be rated 0!! I think they should shut this school down. I wouldn't want my friends kids to go there.

I have had a very positive experience at Scurlock. My son has been there since kindergarten and is currently in 2nd grade now. He has had amazing teachers. I have seen other reviews and just can not imagine why people have said the things that they have said. My son's teachers have gone above and beyond to provide individual instruction. Kudos Scurlock!

Though I'd heard some interesting things from years past, my experience has been pretty much unfailingly positive. The principal is very honest and cares deeply about students. The staff, while generally young, is very dedicated. The schools test scores have increased dramatically over the past couple years. In all, I couldn't be much happier with my children's elementary school.

This is one of the worst elementary schools I have ever had to worry with. We are military and have seen many, but this one tops the cake. The children are unruly and the staff lets them get away with it. The staff themselves are a very bad influence on the students. The new principal seems very nice and also seems genuinely concerned with current problems but don't do anything about them because she is so busy all the time. I would not recommend sending any child to this school. I would rather homeschool my child than send him back to Scurlock.

Scurlock elementary school is not as bad as everyone say's it is! The fact it that you can have bad teachers at any school and Scurlock is no exception. My son went there for kindergarten and he had an exceptional teacher. But I must admit, I was very skeptical of Scurlock when I first saw it. But like someone else has stated...you cannot judge a book buy its cover. It is an older school, and its location is not that great either but you cannot judge the teachers just because of this.

I don't think the school is good at all. My kid went there and the teacher pushed her for no reason. We went and talked to the principal and she didn't do anything. What kind of school is this? They don't protect the kids. My youngest child found a shot gun bullet in the playground. I will say my youngest kids teacher is nice, too bad she leaves at the end of year. But as for that school I wouldn't remind this school to anyone.

Wow,thank you ladies for the views on Scurlock. My daughter just started K there. The neighborhood is rough. When we built our house a few miles away, we never knew Scurlock existed. Stray dogs, unkept homes, shady people walking, but what do you expect when you move to the 2nd poorest county in NC? The school is old, but the teachers are nice. My daughter is learning to read in K. She impresses me everyday! The schools are trying to bring up the EOG scores, but there is one thing we need to realize. A lot of the kids who attend Scurlock have parents that dont care and don't participate in the daily activities, such as homework. My point is if the parents support their child, there will be success. If you are a parent who expects the school system to raise your kid for you, blame yourself when you he/she fails the EOG. It's always easier to blame someone else.

My son is in the 1st grade. My daughter will start K next year. We have had some problems and the principal has helped us solve them efficiently. His K teacher was wonderful and 1st grade is nothing to complain about. My only complaint is my son is advanced for his grade level. Nothing is being done to help him advance further academically. I am teaching him at home. I am a preschool teacher and I don't know how much longer I can teach him at home.

I would like to respond to a comment made about Scurlock. We are a very good school. All the Teachers and assistants care about all the students that attend Scurlock. As for the store beside the school. No drugs are being sold there. People that are new to the area make comments that they are not aware of the surounding. Peolpe need to quit judging a book my its suroundings. We love all our children.

Safety hazzards through the school, not to mention the outside. Basketball court was taken over by locals. Drunks sit outside of the fence on school property drinking as early as 7 am and the children see this.Illegal activity plentiful within 75 ft of school grounds or closer. Check the local 911 calls for the area around the school before sending your children there. Check the state listings for actions taken against teachers. Wake up people, resources are available use them. Find out who is teaching your children. Go to school board meetings, make a difference in your child's education. Demand change. Fix the system that is failing. Check the Lenardo Case.http://www.ruraledu.org/rpm/rpm310a.htm, http://www.ncpublicschools.org/legal/revoketable.html -List of All Disciplinary Actions to Date .

Beware! Scurlock is in a high crime, gang and drug neighborhood. The store beside the school sells alcohol during school hours and the drunks tend to stand in front of the school to drink. The vice principal is a wonderful lady, she will be the principal this year, the teachers I have dealt with have been wonderful, but some do not carry such a glowing reputation. End of Grade tests are the focus for 3rd and 5th grades. Hoke County teaches TO the EOG, not beyond. They also have problems following, establishing and maintaining IEPs which are federally mandated and federally funded. If you are going to be stationed at Ft. Bragg, Do not move to Hoke County...opt for on-base housing and send your elementary and middle school children to DoDDs schools on base. You will be much happier

The trouble that I have with this school is that the teacher doesn't actually teach. She/He just gives the kids paperwork. I am having to teach my child at home. Some examples are that when my child was learning multiplication the teacher told me that my child had to know them up to 12. My child hadn't done any yet in school. Had I not been working with her at home she wouldm't have been ready for the test a few days later. It was the same way with learning cursive. My child hadn't done cursive yet and all of a sudden she was told that she could only write in cursive!! She didn't know what she was doing. So again I had to teach her at home. Sometimes I wonder if it is even worth sending her.
