York Elementary is a phenomenal school. Led by Principal Keith Richardson, teachers and staff take time to know each and every child. Every morning, he and teachers can be found greeting students by name in the lobby. A STEM school, with focus on science, technology, education and math, York will unveil its innovative outdoor learning lab and new playground in fall 2014. My child has had two excellent years at York, made possible by kind, well-educated, energized and supported teachers and staff! We are proud to be part of the York family!

I have been a happy parent at York for 5 years. We are always warmly welcomed by students, active parents and teachers alike. The lovely, small school atmosphere makes our family feel at home. With two children, each has very different personalities, strengths and challenges. Both of them have been met in a unique and wonderful manner. Academics is very important to us. Social and emotional development are, as well. York challenges all these areas in a multitude of areas ensuring our kids our challenged and enriched. This school has an incredible PTA that works really hard at making a positive impact on everyone that walks through the school doors.

My grandson has been at York for 3 years. This is a great school tucked in a beautiful neighborhood. The teachers there are awesome and do a lot to inspire the kids. We work closely with his teachers as he has ADHD and the team spirit is great. They are supportive, communicative, and always have time for meetings. They challenge these students in a fun environment and always make the kids feel important in their learning environment. They make it their mission to get to know the kids. It is also a very safe environment. I cannot say enough good about this school.

Our two children love this school. They entered two years ago and have received amazing affirmation, support, and encouragement. They are excited to go to school each day and even say they miss school during break. The school's attention to their particular learning needs and challenges has been amazing. We are deeply grateful for the experience they have had here.

York Elementary is a sweet little school and has established itself as high-performing and fun-loving all at the same time. The excellent teachers and leadership drive the school to be great, but all it takes is a quick look around and you will see that the kids are really happy. We have 2 children at the school and can't say it's always been that way, but at present, we couldn't be more pleased. The kids are challenged at just the right level and rate, and there is a lot of positive support. The proof is in the pudding with the terrific test scores from last year--out performing peer schools in the area. The size of the school is just right and allows for the kids and staff to get to know the kids. If York is a choice school for you, you really can't do better!

I am a parent of a first grader, and I can't say enough about how happy we are with our experience at York!! The new STEM curriculum and the new principal have made a good school a GREAT SCHOOL. I am very impressed with teachers and the different techniques they use to teach each child. They really do make learning fun, my daughter can't wait to come home and tell me about her day. I truly love being part of the York family.

York is having an excellent year in 2011-2012. I have two children there, and have to say that this year is the best yet. Key changes include: a) York is now a STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math) School, meaning they have lots of themed curriculum at all grade levels. There is a part-time STEM coordinator who helps teachers implement STEM resources in their classrooms, and we also have an ipad card for each grade. Each cart contains 30 ipads full of apps the teachers have selected to enhance what they are doing in the classroom. York also has STEM nights, STEM Expos, Science Fairs, Science EdVentures, and field trips. b) The new principal is very good. He leads by example, listens to parents and teachers, and has gained the respect of everyone associated with York in a very short amount of time. c) Enrollment is up. Right now, in January 2012, the enrollment is at 530 students. d) The PTA is thriving. Fundraising has been great this year, and teacher s grant requests, media center requests, the Fifth Grade Sound to Sea Overnight requests have all been funded. e) The excellent, seasoned teachers were, and still are, the best thing about this school.

My daughter just completed her Kindergarten year at York; she had a terrific teacher and a classroom full of wonderful children. She absolutely loves school! I remain impressed with the way the teachers manage the classroom and know how to motivate and engage each child. I've noticed how riveted and involved the children are with whatever is being taught--they barely notice when I enter the room. I find in my interactions with students of all ages that they are warm, friendly and respectful. The principal was Principal of the Year in the county she moved from when she came to York a few years ago. She has been responsive and has a strong passion to reach, educate and understand each child. She is open to fresh ideas and is a real community builder. It speaks volumes that each student demographic performs above the district for their group--rare even for Wake!

We have had a spectacular Kindergarten year this year. Our teachers were amazing, and my children are both reading/writing above grade level. They have blossomed at York, and we could not have asked for a better experience. York also has a very active PTA, the Principal and staff are wonderful, and the campus is safely nestled in the middle of a beautiful neighborhood. It's truly a sweet, neighborhood school with a great community of families.

We are so glad to be a part of the York Family. I have had several kids at York over the years. While we have had our ups and down like any school, things are great now and getting better all the time. If you are looking for a school and York is your base, count yourself lucky.

Our son has attended York for two years, and we are extremely pleased with his educational experience. His teachers have been excellent, and he has a had a well-rounded experience. We love the family atmosphere and small, well-kept campus. The specials are great, and he has gained a lot of confidence here. Also, the PTA is very active, and there are all kinds of activities and events for families.

York Elementary School has undergone a transformation this past year, starting with a new principal and smaller size due to the implementation of a school re-assignment. Things couldn't be better at York, which has wonderful teachers and solid direction under the new administrative leadership. The PTA is very active and provides great support to the school. The atmosphere is a positive one and the children are sincerely happy. You couldn't find a better small neighborhood school than York Elementary School--a school that is back on track and one of the best in the area.

I must agree with the most recent reviews that were added. York Elementary has been given some unfair reviews by some parents who were disappointed in things that teachers can t control. I will tell you that the teachers at York are dedicated professionals who give their students everything they have. In my class I have such a diverse population when it comes to race as well as ability levels. No matter whom it is I make sure they have the best education possible. I work hard and spend a lot of my own money to make sure that I can make things interesting and fun for them. I m a teacher who has a deep passion for our children and am willing to do whatever it takes to give them the tools they need to succeed. I wouldn t have movie nights nor go roller skating with my kids outside of school if I didn t love my job. There are things we don t like or agree with on a daily basis, but we need to find the positive and keep improving what we can. York is an exceptional school that offers a warm caring climate. This amazing school has events like an annual talent show, picnics, carnivals, eat out nights which show school support, and an out-of-this-world PTA who keep us all going. I m proud to call York my home.

This is my 6th year at YORK with 2 children. It is a great school. If you are looking for a school that your children will love and you will become a part of YORK is it! Our teachers are the most caring and well trained you will find. They challenge our students at every turn. As with any school or place of employment, there are some bad apples...but believe me a couple of bad apples does not destroy this school. We have so many oppportunities for children that are excel academically. Our AG teacher challenges them starting in Kindergarten with additional resources she make available. Both of my children get enrichment 4 days a week! This DOES not happen at other school. Children who need extra help are also very lucky to have a wonderful assortment of very very well trained teachers that can help them reach their potential.

After evaluating all the ratings, I beg to differ on our teaching stars. We work hard, morning, days, and nights. I care about all races, genders, and kids. We need to stop pointing fingers and unite together. York has a dynamic group of teachers, who do the best they can each and everyday for your children. I needed to step up and allow those who read this to know that teachers now have a voice. We may not be happy with certain aspects in the school, but we make the best of every situation. Most importantly we care and want parents to know how three stars isn t rating teachers, but only your unhappiness with higher authorities. I am sorry you feel this way, but rest assured the school is safe, and I teach everyday to all types of kids and challenge them, and see growth that you would need to be in my classroom to believe is true! Lets be positive and come together, that is how anything changes. Giving up, just lets everything crumble.

I have had my children at York Elementary for a total of 6 years. We have had wonderful teachers for both of my children. As with any school in Wake County I feel we are having some growing pains. I do feel that the turnover has been high over the past few years. Overall we have been happy at York but as noted by other parents the lack of control and discipline decisions have been a concern. But instead of heading for another school we will stay at York and support our teachers in any way we can. My child who went to middle school this year is doing extremely well academically, so that must say something for the education received at York.

This school has gone from bad to worse. The discipline is out of control. Many of the teachers and both principals are extremely unprofessional. We are getting out just in the nick of time.

The principal does not know how to deal with conflict appropriately and is extremely close minded when dealing with people of different cultures than her own. She talks down to you and treats people with disrespect

This school has fallen severely under the leadership of the current prinicpal. Her terrible decisions, and refusal to listen to feedback/concerns of parents and staff have caused a nearly hostile environment. This principal's stubborness severely affected my child while at York. Thank God our application to year round school was accepted. I do believe that there are some very good teachers at York, but there is also significant turnover there - that speaks volumes! I've never seen a good school, a school of excellence, be driven into the ground so fast. Very sad.

York Elementary is in a downward spiral under the leadership, or lack therof, of the current principal. She was not there when my eldest child attended York. The school was somewhat better then, although the academics were (and are) questionable. Fourth grade classes are atrociously overcrowded (27 in my child's class). The staff, while dedicated, is overwhelmed. Parent involvement is not as high as it could be. I know of many parents who have asked for volunteer jobs in the classrooms and have not been utilized. We are seriously considering moving or homeschooling to get our children out of this environment.

I am a teacher and my child attended kindergarten at York. While they encourage parental participation and have wonderful literacy programs, the administration does not understand how to respond to concerns or criticism from parents. I have had negative experiences when raising concerns about my child's education. This ranged from defensive attitudes from the administration to inappropriate discipline by both administration and teacher. As a teacher and parent I could not understand how the administration at an elementary school could display such a lack in judgement. I am very happy that my child will not be back at York.

One of the best features of York Elementary is the way they encourage children to read. The media center has many books and they hold scholastic book says regularly for children to pick out and purchase their own books. The media specialist encourages children by recommended authors and books that are similar to the childs interest. They also have a variety of after school clubs, including the chess club. Here children get together in the library and play chess.

My daughter has attended York Elementary for the past two years, but we are trying to enroll her in one of our counties many magnet programs. The test scores are significantly lower than many other Wake County schools. I think that says it all.
