Profile Completeness

INTERMEDIATE

Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

HORRIFYING, that is all I can say. The school was just trash. The teachers hardly taught my child and they changed lesson plans almost everyday so my child couldn't understand what was going on with her learning. ALSO A LOT OF BULLYING!!! They didn't do nothing about it and acted like the students were never heard of just invisible. My child is going 5th grade and is now attending a different school . I encourage you to send your child to Walnut Creek elementary because they WORK and give quality help which paid off really good. When I say don't take your child to this school PLEASE DONT MAKE THAT MISTAKE I DID!!!!!

The consistently high turnover is substantiated by the morale of some of the staff, especially administration. Integrity is very questionable from the top down, there is an unfavorable buddy system.

Barwell was our base school when I bought my house. It was a new school so I sent my kids there with high hopes for their education. I couldnt have been more wrong/disappointed. The administration is deplorable and the teachers demand children to be robots. Another poster had it right on - kids were to be seen and not heard. The environment at Barwell was/is so toxic that I put my house on the market 3 mos after we moved in and took my children out of the school immediately.

I gave this school a rating of 1 star for overall performance. They don't do testing until the 3rd grade and scores are horrible. I think there needs to be more parent involvement and more concerned teachers/staff. But my daughter is only in kindergarten and has blossomed as a child and has a great teacher. She loves getting up and going to school, so much that even when she has a fever or is sick still doesn't want to miss a day. Of course, kindergarten has to be one of the funnest, easiest grades to complete! Hopefully for the 2011-12 school year the changes that are being made will help dramatically.

The best way to describe Barwell is a disengaged culture. Administration, teaching staff, parents, kids all seem disenaged. EOG scores continue to be low in comparison to state and county.

Barwell Road has the worst school climate I've ever experienced and I have been teaching for 12 years. Every meeting began as if it was a gossip session, including some administration. Many teachers hated teaching and would complain about having to stay late...even though they didn't get to school until 8:30! Don't get me wrong, there are some good teachers but I just feel like the school climate is bringing them down and wearing them out. I had to get out of there before it happened to me. If administration reads this, PLEASE turn the climate around. Make teachers actually enjoy their jobs, if not for themselves then for the children.

So far, I'm very pleased with Barwell. Great first impression with kindergarten. They met AYP this year, and are not resting on their laurels at all. Curious to see if this happy community feeling continues through the higher grades.

Barwell is my base elementary school and test scores are embarrassing. I can't believe this is acceptable in the year 2010. This is not something you would choose for your child and should accept. How long should/will it take for scores to improve? I question the standards of WCSS? Additional resources are obviously needed. What does graduation from this school really mean? The scores show that children s needs are not being met. The world is bigger then SE Raleigh and the children have to be able to go toe to toe, they won t be prepared to compete. Education is not a new industry those in charge know winning formulas to make things better why not at this elementary school?

I have a child that is currently enrolled in Barwell School...I cannot wait for her to be accepted to another school, whether it be traditional based or magnet!!! She has been there for 2yrs now and we only left her there to give the school the benefit of doubt (considering they failed AYP's 2yrs in a row). We thought things would get better...not! This school lives by the old tradition that 'children should be seen and not heard' and in this day and age 'children need to be seen and heard!!' It's come in and sit down and be quiet...until I/WE tell you to talk. So sad, so very sad! At times I feel sad to even drop her off at school and can't wait to pick her up. The teachers are doing a cookie cutter job not tailoring the education to each student. Just there doing a job!

Our daughter attended kindergarten at Barwell and we were very pleased with her teacher(s). It was a very positive experience for our daughter. Her teacher took the time to get to know her students and taught accordingly. Our daughter was always motivated and enthused about going to school every day!
