Shallotte Middle School is a great school. The students are well behaved. The staff is very accessible. They expect students to learn. Shallotte is a great town and the school reflects this. The PTO is very active. The PTO board raises money and has purchased extra smart boards for the school. The community and school work well together. Middle school is a time of great change for my child and SMS has been a great place for her. The SRO Gunnel is a real asset. He works with the students teaching responsibility and commitment to to others. GREAT SCHOOL!!
SMS is a wonderful school now since we have a great principal, but the bullying is still going on. I am only 6th grade, but I already know some words I probably shouldn't know until high school. I miss elementary school since they were so involved with my parents. Here in SMS, my mom doesn't even get newsletters of any sort! The teachers, though, are very nice! They don't mind that kids ask questions, but the don't tolerate nonsense. I have one teacher that is trying her best to communicate with our parents by sending newsletters, updates and other information. She is one of my favorite teachers. Over all, I was expecting SMS to be a lot better.... Oh well. =( )=
Not impressed with this school. There are a few good teacher's here, but for the most part unless you just go up there. Teacher's can't seem to get back to you about a simple question via email or phone. .....Would love to see better communication
Mr. Price, the new principal, has done wonders for this school. Discipline has improved, teacher morale has been restored, and there is a sense of renewed optimism. As other parents have noted, SMS has always had some very fine teachers; they now seem to have the support they need and get the credit they deserve.
Although there are some very dedicated teachers at the Middle School there are also some teachers who should have been let go along time ago. I feel the education my child received was below acceptable standards and I had to pay a tuitor to teach my child what should have been learned in school. The school is overcrowded and there is not enough oversight which leads to all the bullying and harassment that takes place there. SMS has been overlooked by the Board of Ed and they have done nothing for the kids in SMS except neglect them. Needless to say my other children will not be atteding SMS.
I am currently a teacher at Shallotte Middle School and I love teaching at this school! I have come into contact with so many wonderful students, staff, and parents that have made the teaching experience extremely worthwhile! Our school is doing so much to enrich students academically and socially that I am very proud to be a part of it. We have a lot of fun learning and get to be involved with the community as well. Of all the schools in Brunswick County, this is the one that I want to be a part of!! Go SMS!
I am thankful that my son has 'graduated' from SMS. There are some very dedicated teachers, but the majority are lazy, undedicated and rude. The principal has retired, so maybe with different leadership the school can move forward. There is a real problem with teacher retention. My son did not have a full time math teacher since 6th grade. Parents, insist that your child gets computer instruction. There is a mandatory 8th grade computer test!!!
I currently attend SMS. I'm going into 8th grade next year, and I'm dreading going back to the school. Shallotte Middle School is completely unsatisfactory, and it has been for my siblings before me, too. There are so many problems at this school that it's hard to fit it all in one 150-word review. First of all, the teachers are very far from what you'd want for your education. Many teachers I've had this year and last year play favorites like crazy. Some kids can do nothing and get great grades because they're popular, and others will try their hardest and come up short. Also, the teachers have absolutely no authority over their students. Seeing kids disrespecting adults and getting away with it is just pathetic. The atmosphere at SMS is not a learning environment by any means. Even the best student will be distracted and their education will be unfavorable.
I am attending SMS now And I think it is an awsome school. They have fun programs and have great teachers and an awsome principle.
They say they will protect your child, but they allow other students to bully your child around and do nothing.
All of my experiences with SMS have been negative. There is absolutely no regard for parental concerns, the reception staff is rude to say the least. I am considering moving out of the district and it appears from other parent comments that I am not alone.
Shallotte Middle School is continually the target of individuals in the community, who believe everything they read in the papers. The faculty at SMS is well-qualified and genuinely interested in the success of all the students enrolled there, but they are struggling to keep it together for the students in the face of a seemingly revolving door when it comes to adminstration. When this next school year begins, SMS will have two new APs joining a principal who has only been at the middle school since January. When continuity and consistency issues are addressed, the community will see that SMS really is providing students with the tools they need to move on to the next level.
Shallotte Middle is a school in trouble. Admin ignores and or hides problems. As all have seen in the papers lately bullying is a major problem that is consistently ignored with devastating results. Teacher moral is beyond low. The general perception of the school is that it is a war zone. I tend to agree.
My son has attended SMS for two years and will be in the eighth grade for 2004-2005 year. He has had a great two years and looking forward to this year. The only complaint I have is why would you give AG student more homework than the average student. It seems the teacher make it harder on the smarter students. I pulled my son out of AG, because he was very unhappy with the class and the teacher. He was doing a great job, but was very unhappy. Learning should be fun and interesting not a drill like the army. SMS is a great school with some faults.
The school is not providing necessary accommodations for my child. They told me at a meeting that there was not enough staff at the school to provide the assistance my child received at the elementary level. After explaining that my child had an IEP, the teachers still did not follow the plan set forth. One teacher told me she thought he would use this particular accommodation as a crutch. I do not see the concern for the individual student that I am comfortable with. I teach in another district and know how important it is to follow the inclusion plan and IEP, but I am not getting the results and everything is a struggle.
