Southport elementary is by far the worst school my children have ever attended. My child was smacked in the head right in front of the teacher. As he cried, the teacher refused to let him to to the nurse, but instead told him to not pester the offending child! This school not only tolerates bullying, this is the school mentality. We had a math teacher scream at the top of her lungs in the face if several children. In all grades, except 4th, the majorityof the teachers are angry, and despise their jobs. There are a few good ones, but unfortunately they are repressed by administration and policy. Special needs children with IEP's or 504's are especially vulnerable because in lots of cases, their needs are not being met and standards of care are totally ignored in drastically overcrowded classrooms (25-30 children per teacher). The children score well on achievement tests, despite their circumstances. That's about the only good thing southport has to offer. They teach the kids to pass standardized tests, but not much else. We have had the opprotunity to be a part if several great schools up and down the east coast. This is by far the worst we have ever encountered.

Warning! We had a horrible experience at this school! We never felt welcome. The class sizes were huge at 26+ kids per class. My child had a teacher and bus driver that routinely yelled at them. My children were yelled at, down at their level, right in their face by the staff often. Of what I observed, no one on the staff saw anything wrong with this negative-based, boot-camp style, authoritarian treatement of children. The local parents and children sadly do not know any different. My children did, as they had 4 years of wonderful experiences in schools before moving here. Being treated in such a harsh, disrespectful way was confusing to them. It destroyed their love of learning, love of school, and respect for authority right before my eyes. My children begged me not to go to school. The atmosphere was unbearable for them. I worried about my children every day that they attended this awful school. Several times my child was pushed down, and kicked and when responded back got all the blame. My child was black and blue after getting beat by another child. In my opinion, the vice principal was horrible. She made it clear to me that her staff could do no wrong!

Most of the staff screams and yells at the children all day. My child comes home very upset everyday. I have seen it for myself when I have been to the school. It is really disgraceful that these teachers are allowed to speak to the children with such disrespect. How can they expect children to behave with respect and kindness towards others when some of the staff screams and yells constantly at them. Only a couple of teachers seem to be kinder than most of them. This will not make children want to continue their education in school. It is hard enough to deal with other kids being bullies. Teachers need patience, if not then they should not have chosen to work with kids. This school should also discipline the children that go around bullying and being mean to other children instead of having the parent constantly going back to the school and making sure the school puts a stop to it. Children are spoken to rudely as well.

We have had one child graduate on to middle school from SES and one child still there. We have been impressed with the administration and staff, and for the most part had positive interactions and communications with their teachers through the years. We are very happy with Southport Elementary!

Both of my children attended Southport Elementary and enjoyed every school year. They also learned a lot while they were students there. I have been a teacher at Southport Elementary since 1984.

For Brunswick County, this is an OK school. The teachers have many years experience and are empowered within their workplace. My children have good relationships with their teachers. The administration is caring and does what it can to work with concerned parents. The PTA involvement is so-so. More parents should be involved. However, many of these children are at a disadvantage due to the socioeconomic background from where they come. The community at large seems like it is concerned with the needs of the school, but the in-school volunteer and mentorship needed for at-risk children is just not enough yet. Fostering relationships with the students as well as preparing them for continued success in the future goes hand in hand. Test scores for this school in math and reading are below average and not acceptable if we truly want these kids by and large to be successful.

Southport Elementary is a very nice school for a small, but rapidly growing area. Recently renovated and a new addition was completed. Great principal and staff.
