I have 3 children at this school. I do not know why the administration changes things so close to the end of the year but should have happened long ago. The new bus schedule is a nightmare and the overcrowding on buses is insane. Kids have to stand in the isles. Sixth graders are out in trailers where the bathrooms are mostly shut down and super hot or cold depending on the weather. No safety. All of my kids teachers have poor communication even letting one of my kids almost fail the first semester without a phone call, email, or even smoke signals. I even personally tried to volunteer at the school with no luck. My clearances went through in the first month of school and asked until xmas break to find out that they were done. Another dozen times asking about volunteering now with no luck at all any times this year to volunteer. Wanted to help with proctoring and no communication. Had questions that were unanswered by the principal or anyone else. The school does not want help and ignore you. The counselors will help when made to.

This school is not a good school at all. Many fights break out all the time, and student conduct is miserable. I have had a substitute teacher for half of this year and she is not a proper social studies teacher. There are reports that the principal and vice principal have been recently fired too. Many teachers can not control their students and therefore most of the day is spent being yelled at. There are a few decent teachers, but over all it has been a terrible year here at Overhills Middle.

Overhills Middle School just recently did some improvement late in the school year with their Administration Staff; better late than never. But please be aware that this school is so overcrowded, that students have to lug all their belongings around because there are no enough lockers to go around. This has caused my child to be a victim of theft countless times in which pencils, paper, and baseball caps were stolen from his bookbag; even half eaten food/snacks and drinks were sadly taken. Overcrowding also causes 6 graders to be taught inside of inadequate trailers that are drafty and moldy. Overcrowding also forces several classes to take a lunch break as early as 10:00 am. This also affects transportation, where buses are arriving and dropping off students late. I was told the fix to this unfortunate situation is the construction of a new school. In my opinion it is not being built fast enough. Since my child started 7th grade he has had teachers switched around, some even leaving; I believe this is the 4th Homeroom teacher....I lost track. In conclusion, with school near its end & the change with administration will hopefully improve teacher, parent, and student morale.

We haven't even started school yet and my son is not even in the system. According to them, they haven't entered everyone in the system and will have them entered by the end of the week. That is not good enough for me. I'm already trying to find a different school. They were not helpful at all.

Horrible school! My son has been bullied in front of TEACHERS who just stood by and did NOTHING! Both of our children who have attended OMS say they wish they could go somewhere else as they did not feel safe there. The school teachers and staff tell you what you want to hear and then do nothing to fix the problem. Teachers expect you to do their job for them. My children have not had one positive experience from attending this school. I would not recommend this to anyone!

Its good to have these reviews here for both parents, teachers, & the community. This really worries because we moved here from out of state and both of my children will be in the MS & HS and this worries me and I pray and hope this will not be a bad experience for my kids. To parents & teachers, there is so many negativity in this world. I hope we can try not to concentrate on the negative but if there is some, that we can come together and have a solution. Schools nowadays are not easy, any way you see you. As a teacher or student but the we all need to work together to make things better especially for the sake of our kids but truth is, some kids are not as eager or respectful as they used to be back when most of us used to go to school. There are still those who make it a #1 priority to make their education the main focus which is great but again even doing so its not easy because there are those who use this as a way to start bullying and so forth. Lets put our best efforts and look at the positive and think positive for the sake of education. I cant help but worry though ; ( I rated this a 3 but I have yet to have any experience with this school I have to be somewhat neutral.

Parents if you have another choice between this school and another, pick the other one!!! I had so many issues trying to even get a teacher to answer my emails. It seem as if this school has an extremely high turn over rate. My child had 3-4 math teachers his 7th grade year. Class sizes will run you from 35-47 students per teacher. The teachers are trying but they are just too overwhelmed. My neighboors daughter was bullied so bad she had to move her. If you have another choice pick that one. This is a terriable school!!!!!!!

As a teacher at the school, I take offense to some of the comments posted. Just like any work place there are always stronger and weaker teachers. It is a shame that most of the reviews stem from isolated negative events that are being applied towards the whole of the school. As mentioned in other reviews, we do have large class sizes. Despite that fact I know I, as well as many of my coworkers, work tirelessly to try and provide a quality education to all students. I have a bachelors in education and a masters in my content area. I am a part of professional organizations to keep me updated in the latest educational trends. I spent the entire summer working to gather resources to support the change to the Common Core curriculum that would engage and challenge my students. I love teaching my students and enjoy building relationships with them. Tearing down our school will do nothing to improve it. Try giving teachers the benefit of the doubt, we're not all bad.

Instead of worrying about school uniforms, an overhaul to the teachers needs to be done. My child had a whole semester without the assigned teacher and a substitute was used as a perm. teacher. If there is going to be strict rules and uniforms impemented, then we need strong teachers that can handle and enforce discipline in the classroom instead of calling in sick and spending a few days at the beach to avoid getting rid of the troublemakers inside the classroom.

My son went to this school years ago and was never challenged. We had to fight for everything. My daughter currently goes here and we hate it.Both of my children are in the gifted program, yet neither one of them have challenging work. The teachers treat the children like they are bad kids, they even talk negatively about them within hearing distance. I have heard this many times. One teacher who had my child twice a day for over half the year still didn't know my child name. I really think this is sad. I am my child biggest supporter, however, I don't feel that I should have to fight with the school to do their job. They preach, "no child left behind" unfortunately the gifted children get left behind due to the school catering to the children who can not pass the EOG test. You can find a few good teachers but their hands are usually tired by Harnett county board of education. As for parent involvement, they discouraged me. They only want someone to do their photo copies and things like that. I am so happy for my children that we are out of this school finally.

My child is new to this school and since day one we have had serious problems with racism from other students. I made the administration aware of it immediately but my phone calls are dismissed and never returned. The class sizes are too much for 1 teacher. on my chids first day the Principal had to be called in to control the class bc the teacher couldnt. Communication between teacher and parent is non exisistant, if you have the option for your child to attend another school...do so

Open house was a mess didnt have my child in the system nor was she in the system on the 1st day of school stood in the office for 3hrs waiting for them to get her in there system so she could start school, had issues since the first week. No communication between teachers and parents (no call backs from principal either), no lockers for the 6th graders children have to carry all there stuff from class to class, cant get the classes that my child had signed up for, One of my kid teacher use nicknames with students. The principal have no idea on whats going on in the school, One of my childs male teachers spends more time talking to the girls about their favorite celebrities than teaching.

I have two children that have attended Overhills Middle school and they both have had some really good teachers. My oldest son went on to excel in honors classes in High school and my other son is doing well too, even though he is more of a follower than his older brother. They had to participate in the science fair every year and have some homework every day, even if it is reading. My children would come home often telling me about something new they learned in school. I was impressed with much of what they had learned.

There is no way that this school is as bad as you say! I am not saying everyone does exactly what they are supposed to do. But, I guarantee that I was a teacher that was in constant contact with parents and students! You can still see it today! AS far as challenging, if you can not do the work, then it is challenging! So do not blame one incedent on all the teachers, who by the way take pride in what they do! I am a teacher and we do our job! No student is labeled, if kids are not acting right it starts at home!

This school has serious issues with communication between teachers and the parent. I have had my child come in and tell me very disturbing things that the teachers have said, almost like they want to scare the children. Since day one of the first conference I asked for verbal/email communication but to no avail. It was only when I sent emails asking why they did certain things did they start but it quickly stopped. Classrooms don't have structure at all, I would know I sat in on one and was completely shocked. When a teacher tells me they're usually not this subtle, I knew there was a problem. Kids are "labeled" and treated as such. It's sad to have a school in this type of condition. Our future is sitting in those classes and with what you have teaching them, consider it over. It needs a turnaround and it needs one fast. Our kids are going into this world totally unprepared because teachers care more their pay than the students.

The education system at this school is out of control. The Teachers don't care about teaching, it seems to me they are there to collect a check every week. The board really needs to figure out how to fix this system, because the kids are the ones who are not going to be prepared. Let's see if they care, my guess is they don't, or the people teaching would not be teaching.

So glad that we moved away from this school, have had issues since the first week. No communication between teachers and parents (no call backs from principal either), classes way too big, school obviously cant handle this many kids since all 6th graders are separated in trailer like classrooms with no lockers. Projects are a bit much even for parents to help, son did more spelling and english in elementary school.

My experience with OMS was terrible. I have a child in the school and took it off in the middle in the year. The group avarage is about 33 per class. Too many kid to be controlled by the teachers. The teacher lost more than half of the class trying to controled the kids. Discipline is a joke. One of my kid teacher use nicknames with students. The principal have no idea on whats going on in the school.

I have 2 children in this school if you can call it that. The teachers dont challenge the kids. My kids havent had homework in 2 years. There's no report writting and only the occasional project. One project took 3 months and my child worked extremely hard to make it perfect and the teacher didnt grade them just gave everybody A's if they had one. One of my girl's male teachers spends more time talking to the girls about their favorite celebrities than teaching. At a fair they held last year, my wife and I were buying tickets 4/$1. We gave the person selling them $5 and we got 16 tickets. After correcting them and walking away my son said that it was his teacher. What does that say for the staff. We will be relocating after this year!

oms is a great adition of spring lake schools yes there is strict rules such as no high 5's and etc . The teachers look for great common scence and personality than the corect way how to teach the class. But the reason why I gave my school a 4 because we are great group of kids when we want to .fyi this letter is made by a six grader.

The rules and regulations are very extreme for students within this age group. Some teachers are very unprofessional when not in the presence of an administrator/principal or assistant principle. The teachers are more focus on behaviors and seem to be more on the Mental Health Technician side of things than educating the young minds that are in attendance. Some of the teachers are very one sided in their approach to student issues or incidents......

OMS has been an awesome experience for us. My son has loved going to middle school and what a turn around from 5th grade! His academics skyrocketed, the teachers communicated and the staff really did care about the outcome of my son's success. The guidance staff was exceptional and Mrs. White goes way above and beyond. Front office is always pleasant and helpful! I am looking forward to the new principal this year...she was great as VP.

I am a teacher at OMS and I will have to say that it has been a phenomenal experience over the past two years. The school has changed so much under the new administration. This has been such a relief to have principals who are not afraid to care. They epitomize the team concept and always strive to make interpersonal connections with the staff and students. As a parent, I would never allow one negative experience to dismiss the abundance of great things that happen here. School is definitely what you make it, and we have something special here...not perfect people, but people who care.

Wow! My family and I just moved to the Overhills area. Before we moved, we came to the school to get some information, we got that plus so much more. Right there on the spot we was taken on a tour of the school. Every class we went to the teacher came out and invited us in. While we were there the 7th grade was changing classes. The kids were so well behaved. We are military and we haved moved around so much, but this is the first school we have ever been to that treated us like we are family. Our children have been going there for about 3 months and it is even better then what we had ever thought it would be. I want to say Thank you OMS staff and students for making us feel at home!! The Panther Fest rocked!

My experience here at Overhills Middle School has been great and I have learned a lot. The faculty and staff here are awesome and give you a lot of respect. The principles here can be a little on the edge sometimes but they still do their part and make good decisions that are fair for the school. The athletic department is so wonderful! Being a former cheerleader for the school I can honestly say that the athletic department is something I'll never forget. The energy, the excitement, the pride that we share at OMS can never be replaced by any other school! Being at OMS has been fun and has prepared me to go to the high school with a good strong head of confidence on my shoulders and a goal to succeed and reach higher heights. As us Panthers always say: Live It. Love It. Rep It. Panther Pride.

We love OMS. The administration team and the staff take the time to get to know the students. Our children are happy and they know they can go to the principals or the teachers for support. It is wonderful to see the positive behaviors and attitudes that uplift the school. Our 8th grader does not want to leave and go to the high school.

I was shocked to have my son tell me about some the things that go on in the classrooms. These kids are out of control and the teachers can't handle them. I thought that with the new principal things would get better but it has not changed. When I spoke to Mrs. Cooper her answer was 'we are working on it', well I guess she is still working on it but I have yet to see any improvements, and this is her 2nd year. While she may be working on it in the mean time my child is the one suffering.

What a wonderful school. There is so much more going on there. The school has changed so much over the past two years. My children love going there. I feel that they are happy and safe. Both of my children say that their teachers have offered after school tutoring to anyone who wants it.Now that shows you they care. Don't believe all the rumors, go check it out like we did. We were pleased with everything, from the office staff, guidance secretary, Mrs. Cooper, to the lunch room staff. Your doing a great job.

This is my childs last year at Overhills and so far it has been great. There has been so many positives changes there this year. I feel very welcomed when I come into the school. There are alot of new faces there and they seem to be there for the children not just for a job.I go into the school every morning, there are teachers and staff members everywhere montoring the kids. The kids seem happy and show alot of respect to the teachers there. It is like a totally new school compared to when it first opened. Overhills Middle is doing a Great job. Keep up the good work.

I'm a parent of a 8th grade student who is very dissatified with Overhills Middle school. I say this to because my cild's academic need weren't being met and it was not addressed by the educators in anyway. Now my child is behind in areas she should be on task with. It seems to me that if the student's don't grasp it first hand then they are left behind..... If everyone is grasping it so fast then this should allow more indiviual time for other students!! I have a great respect for teachers who have chosen this career field but let's not forget everyone learns on a diffrent level and just because this is so DON'T FORGET the ones who might need a little extra!!!!

I do have to say that I agree to the previous statement that I have read concerning Overhill Md Sch. I was so excited to purchase a home in the Harnett County area, just so my children could have a chance at a decent education and I have to say that overall, I am very unsatisfied with everything from the secretary all the way down to the bus system. When will our public school give our children the type of education, they need to succeed. What will the option be for parents that cannot afford to place their children in private schools? We must fight for our children rights not only for a decent education, but for a great education. I dont believe that many students will achieve this at Overhill.

Overhills Middle School was a big dissappointment for our family. I want to believe that most of the teachers in the school were choosen because they displayed a quality that would not only educate but have a high standard of moral character to help shape and mold our children. The teachers and facualty that I met for the most part were not of a caliber I was privledged to in my school days. The children in the school were disrespectful and lacked the disapline nessesary for a learning enviroment. I can not put all the blame on the school, the parents also have the responsibility to our children to raise sociable, educated citizens. The facualty to me seemed over whelmed and lacked the drive to make things better.

My son went to this school in the 6th and and portion of the 7th grade, and it is by far the worst I've ever seen, the students do not care. The staff can not control the students nor do they seem to care if the children recieve an education. I cannot think of one good thing to say. Even the bus driver was terrible.
