From a Teacher's view point: I enjoy the students that I have and teach at M. Hearne. We all have challenges in our lives and should not let them get in the way of educating our students. We need more involvement from parents and more positive input from others. We do care about the students. Please encourage your child to always do the best to their ability.
My daughter was forced to go to Hearne this year because of redistricting of the school zones. I have tried very hard to help out at the school but it is impossible. The staff acts like they want the parents involved but that is just for show. The new principal is very nice, but she has her way of doing things and is not willing to change things. The communication between the school and parents is very poor. The rules like dress code and car pool are selectively enforced. The PTO is non-existing and so is the interaction of parents with one another. But the biggest problem in this school is by far the fact, that it is not diverse at all!
I am a parent of Hearne Elementary and my children have attended Hearne since August of 2001. Schools are rated mostly on their performance as a whole. I feel that Hearne Elementary is sometimes graded unfairly. To teach at a school where there are constant discipline problems is a challenge and until a person has experience those conditions in every way their opinions would be bias. It takes caring, concerned and dedicated teachers to teach at such a school. I have walked the halls of Hearne for many years and have met some very excellent teachers and staff members. As for the field trips and other priviledges that other schools experience, the PTO plays an important role on that and Hearne has not had a strong PTO for quite sometime. It matters not a person background any child can be taught when they are taught discipline.
I'm a teacher at Hearne. I think the teachers who work there care. Why would they work there if they didn't? We don't blame anyone. Teaching starts first from the home. Children learn from their parents. They also learn very early how their parents support their school and their teachers.
Not a good elementary School. The teachers are not the best, but the school tries to shift the blame on the students that attend the school. This school doesn't take trips as much as better schools. I feel that the staff has a non caring attitude toward the students because of their backgrounds, coming from mostly low-income homes.
