I'm new student at Hanes. This school is very awesome I really like it here at Hanes especially with the HAG program. This School is the BEST school i ever went to
I agree with previous comments that remark that this school is getting worse. I enrolled my daughter in 6th grade this year based in the information I read in the NC Report Card but the school is not causing me that good impression at all. The last report is two years old and it is obvious, since the first visit to the school, that it does not describe how the school is now. I am not very happy with my choice and neither is my daughter. Considering other public schools in the county this is still the third but I am feeling really concerned about public schools and do not imagine this can change but for the worst.
AWESOME school! If I could have designed a school for my child, who is gifted in math, has a learning disability in reading and writing, and has ADHD, it would be this school. I don't think it's the school for every child, but they do an amazing job for the type of school they are (STEM magnet school).
As a student at Hanes for all 3 years, I have to say school got worse each year. 6th grade was the best year for me with teachers that seemed to care about learning. Seventh grade, I had pretty good teachers with one that didn't even teach. Now in 8th grade I only have one good teacher who really seems to care about learning. This school has really disappointed me each year as I was so excited in 6th grade. The thing that really bugs me is that in AG now, non AG students are mixed into my class more than they should be. There are at least 10 of them in my class and they sometimes create a huge distraction. I one day asked one of them how they got in my class because most have failing grades in my class and they said they did not test to get into my class. Although the programs are great at Hanes like the project Lead the way which I love. I do recommend this school to any parent it is far better than any other middle school around!
This schools program is incredible! You have to see it in action to believe all the things their students have the opportunity to be a part of. While not in the better part of the city of Winston Salem, Hanes is a safe place to send your children and for them to excel in middle school. The fact that they share a campus with Lowrance School (a school for special needs students) has really taught my child about life and how we can better improve the lives of those around us.
This school is one of the best kept secret of Winston Salem. My daughter attended this middle school and then begged me to send her to a different middle school where all of her friends were going. I have regretted giving in to her wish since. The difference between the Hanes teachers and the new school were huge! The teachers at Hanes genuinely care about each student and were so big on communicating with the parents. The principal leads the charge for structure and excellence. I love HANES!
There is a large disparity at this school between how the 'traditional' students are treated as opposed to the HAG students. The HAG students have all the resources and positive attention, great teachers, and everything given to them, while the non-HAG kids go without, and are treated differently, are low in resources like textbooks, etc. I am very concerned about this and do not feel it is right.
As a current student at Hanes I would like to say that they got rid of the lines in the hallway like a week after them put them up.
As a Middle Schooler at Hanes, I must say one thing: This school has become a bit over controlling of thier students. Or shall I say alot? As some have stated, the principal is over-controlling. While I do understand the fact that uniroms do have somewhat of a reason, why do we need to walk in lines through the halls? Why do we need lanes in the halls? Sometimes I forgetof the fact that I'm not still in elementary school. What's with the assigned lunch seats 'so we don't hurt anyone's feelings?' I've had several teachers mention of such; I suppose not realizing that we have to be exposed to such sooner or later. The school is rather unruly at times, as well. =/
I went to hanes for all three years of middle school, and as I got older it seemed the school got worse. The principal has become over controlling and the standard mode of dress was horrible. They now have lanes in the hallways, assigned staircases, and who knows what else. Although I made some great friends there, I would no longer advise sending your child there.
I love love love love love this school and everyone in it!!!!!!!!!!! ~ a seventh grader
My family has been extremely pleased with our Hanes experience. We currently have a student in 7th grade and have a rising 6th grader on the way to Hanes next year. The AG/HAG program has fantastic teachers that provide engaging classroom experiences to students. The technology at this school is second to none in this part of the country. Check out the website Hanesms.org to see what an amazing place this is. Some students complain about the standard mode of dress, but I feel it helps keep the focus away from the haves and the have nots and serves as an equalizer among all attendees of the school. Students do get a a fairly wide range of choices in color and several styles to choose from, so it is not a 'uniform' per se. Students are offered a wide range of extracurricular activities and leadership opportunities at this school. Great PTSA.
This is a horrible school they treat the kids like kindergardners with lines in the halolway and teachers walking students to EVERY class! I would not reccommend this school to anyone and i have gone here 6th-8th grade -8th Grade student in Hanes Middle
While Hanes does have a great HAG program, I feel as a community member that it should also be commended for great educational program that it provides for the neighborhood children. It is much more difficult to teach children who do not necessarily have a passion to study. The teachers offer many different learning styles and experiences for the classroom. There are a lot of extra curricular activities offered through Hanes which many students are actively involved in!
I have a rising 6th grader and we are very excited to be sending him to Hanes Magnet School where he will be in AG classes and in the Project Lead the Way program to prepare him for engineering! Amazing! I also like the uniform dress code! We are looking forward to a great year!
This school is awesome because it has the HAG (Highly Academically Gifted) program that you have to be tested for. If you have a high enough IQ and you pass all the tests, you can get in. The teachers are excellent and the curriculums are very advanced (1-2 years ahead of grade) I went here for 6th 7th and 8th grade. It's a great school. The only problem is the non-HAG part of the school. It is mostly kids from the neighborhood, and they are very unruly and disruptive.
