Teacher's make themselves available to parents & communication is good. I've seen positive interaction w/ teachers & students, however I'm a little concerned that some teachers may be pushing ADD/ADHD meds. I like how the school makes encouraging intercom announcements when any student/grade/group/teacher has won an award or medal. Velva does have a strong concentration on sports but it's a really small school and a large ratio of the students are needed to make up a 'team'. Like that the school encourages reading (contests are always going on) and sometimes they even set up story time in tents (include bear costumes & smore snacks). RUMORS about teen drug use in Velva, but my own kids are still in elementary. One other point that I like is that the elementary & high school are one building but nicely separated. My kids don't like the lunch here - they'd like more salad options.

Teacher-student ratio is higher than it has been in the past. That is too many. Have heard many teachers express concern regarding the increased ratios. Very high teacher quality and administration is always willing to talk with parent. Test scores appear to be higher than other nearby schools. An overly-strong concentration on sports - more so than any other extra-curricular events for all grade levels.
