Having had two kids graduate from ALHS, we have many positive memories and experiences to cherish as we all move on to bigger and better things. Everything was great, except the marching band. Yes, the kids work extremely hard, but the halftime shows are always incredibly boring. Everyone has noticed the opposing band getting a more enthusiastic response from our crowd, and the reason is because we have all been to more entertaining funerals than the shows that we have been forced to watch for several years. It would be nice if the administration would look back and re-examine the purpose of the halftime show: to entertain the crowd. Back in the seventies and parts of the eighties the band was well known as a huge, loud and entertaining band. Not anymore. It is too bad that we don't have a quality band to go along with the quality football team. (By the way, I was a season ticket holder until a couple of years ago, and the same comments that I have written were spoken every Friday night by many people in my section who are very well known and influential in the community.) Besides the lousy halftime entertainment, Avon Lake High School is great!
After contemplating a Catholic - Private School education for my two sons - we decided on ALHS. A terrific choice - great teachers, programs, mentors and experience. A very rare combination of small community spirit, where the high school anchors the town. Perhaps that's why their mascot is the Shoremen...... plus the community supports when needed - by passing the majority of levies. A true find !!
They have some good teachers and academic programs, but if you aren't an athlete you are considered to be 2nd class in the category of importance there. There were students there when the Avon Lake Shoremen were contending for a championship that got suspended long enough to get off suspension in time to play in the next football game. The administration is very inconsistent with rules and school policy and there are different consequences for one students actions than that of another student depending on their social status. I left Avon Lake High School early and switched to ECOT after begging my parents for months and having to prove that the treatment there was unfair. Try to avoid this school system if you can. They care about academics but if you aren't planning on attending a high quality college the counselors think less of you.
This is a good school and has great academic programs. Needs to work on acknowledging the minorites in the school and making diversity more prevalent with in this school.
Avon Lake is awesome! Not only is there a superb academic program including an increasing number of new honors, and AP classes, but the extracurriculars are good too. The athletic and music program are both things to be proud of... just look at our football team and choir! ALHS is a great school in a great community.
