We couldn't be happier! We've really seen our daughters blossom into independent learners. The structure provided encourages patience, manners, problem solving and taking care of the people and things around you. When your child tells other children they love school then you know you have them in the right learning environment!

When your children attend South Suburban Montessori, your family will become part of a larger family . I really enjoy being part of a smaller community within my own community. Everyone is very thoughtful, kind and supportive. The classroom sizes are appropriate, the rooms are well balanced with the appropriate educational resources. There are plenty of opportunities to meet other families, support the school, and build life long relationships. But most importantly the teachers at SSMS really instill the Montessori philosophy and carry out the principals and learning disciplines patiently and professionally. Personally, I love the small class size, the opportunity for my children to advance at various paces per skill area and that the educational resources can continue to challenge them and excel their learning when they are ready. The Montessori environment has been a wonderful experience for my children and have helped me shape them into independent little people with a strong foundation for whatever the future hold for them. And the teachers, staff, parents and children have touched our family positively and many will be part of our family for years to come.

My son has been at South Suburban for two years and his younger sibling will be joining him this fall. It follows Maria Montessori's philosophy and has absolutely wonderful teachers and staff supporting it. My son is very happy there and we are excited to have his younger sibling start there soon. There is also a strong sense of community and parents are required to contribute to their child's education through various volunteer opportunities. I highly recommend this school!

I have had my children enrolled at SSMS for many years. They are both in the elementary programs today and are simply thriving in all areas - academics, music, art and life skills. The Montessori method is at the heart of the school and its core values--and it is embodied every single day in the classrooms. Each classroom has been well equipped and all my children's teachers have approach their leaning with individual, distict strategies that bring out the best while still ensuring a truly well-rounded education. Keep up the fantastic work.

SSMS is a great school. It was referred to us by our friend and we are extremely glad they did. Our son has been there for more than 4 years now and he is turning out to be a better and responsible student with each passing year. The teachers are terrific and treat each child with so much patience and respect. They truly have a great montessori curriculum with an emphasis on independent learning and world culture.

SSMS has wonderful, calm, patient teachers who have to deal with a lot of different personalities with both the children and the parents. Our daughter and son both attend SSMS and they are doing extremely well. They are kind to other children and very independent. If you want the best for your child, it will be worthwhile for you to check out this school!

SSMS has an exceptional staff and curriculum!! I am a SSMS parent with a 21/2 year old and a 5 year old in the program. The staff and curriculum at SSMS have allowed my children to be happy and successful while at the same time instilling the critical values of respect, patience, self-control, and other social graces. My time spent observing in the classrooms solidified my appreciation for the Montessori Method and SSMS adheres to the authenticity of this method. The children are engaged, yet self-directed. They are challenged, yet allowed to proceed at a pace which accommodates them intellectually, physically, and psychosocially. They are allowed independence and choice, yet learning is constructed in such a way as to ensure mastery and success. My children have excelled academically as well as psychosocially. I plan to enroll them through eighth grade!!

We could not be more pleased with the development of both our 3yr old son who has been at SSMS for 1.5yrs and our 5 yr old daughter who has been attending for 3 yrs. The excellent educators go beyond the studies and really create a community of learning. The staff is so engaged and the families are completely committed to the education of their children. SSMS is a fabulous school and worth every penny!

My daughter attended as a 3 and 4 year old and then transferred to public. We absolutely loved SSMS, but made the decision to put her in public. That was a mistake. Her kindergarten teacher commented on how polite and prepared she was for school. After a couple years in public we decided to put her back in at SSMS. She absolutely loves going to school everyday, she is independent and shows so much pride in her work. We love her teacher, who recognizes who our daughter is and treats each child in the classroom as and individual. It is amazing to see the confident child our daughter has become. We plan on keeping both our children at SSMS through eighth grade. These Montessori children have great pride in themselves, adaptability, and care for the world around them.

I think the previous poster was talking about the wrong school? There is lots of light and the snacks (which are very plentiful) don't cost any money. The rooms are also not cramped at all and include a library, a music room, and a gym as well as lots of outdoor space with hiking trails,. This is a great school with a wonderful learning environment. The teachers are extremely well educated and truly care about your children. I especially feel that the school has made great strides in the 1st through 8th grade which has more than doubled in size during the last two years I have had my daughter in the preschool.

Not at all good.....small classrooms....shabby environment....high fees(650$) and Food = 18$...a very low quality. Students cramped in dull light classes. For food children are fed with 1 cracker only + 1 thin slice of raw capsicum and ranch sause. I felt unjustice for my kid to be in that school.

This school is really accepting of all children and more than happy to work with parents. They are making great strides in their communication between teachers, administration and parents. My child is so excited to go to school every morning and he doesn't even realize that he is excelling in academic areas because he is having so much fun.

As parents, we are very happy with SSMS. Our child is thriving. The school seems to have the right priorities despite a parent base that perhaps doesn't care as much about being 'Montessori' as they should. However, the children and what they accomplish is impressive. We are fully pro-Montessori.

We made our decision when we observed the calm, peaceful learning environment of SSMS compared to other preschools, one where the teachers threw toys on the floor for kids to devour versus treating the toys with respect. Seeing the children, a few years in the program shows how far the children are in maturity and educationally. If you are looking for a day care, this isn't it. The purpose is to get the children learning via play not to keep them busy until they leave.

Great quality teaching. Everyone is very personable, the teachers regularly take time to keep us informed about my child's status, and they welcome parent involvement.

'The key difference that sold me on SSMS versus other preschools was the teachers. They were calm, talked slowly and quietly, and genuinely exuded a presence of patience and calm. Other schools' teachers appeared more rushed, excitable or loud. My wife was sold on the environment not having toys, loud colors or a crowded, busy feel. - Parents

I for one can attest that South Suburban Montessori school is an absolutely amazing learning environment where both of my children are flourishing! This school exemplifies a true montessori education as founded by Maria Montessori. The children learn and interact in a nurturing environment that fosters their love of learning. South Suburban Montessori is blessed to have an incredible faculty who genuinely care about the growth and development of each child. I could not give a stronger endorsement to any educational institution!

About these ratings

The Community Rating is the school’s average rating from its community members (e.g., parents, students, and school staff). The highest possible rating is five stars; the lowest is one star.

We currently do not have any test score information for this school. Unlike public schools, private schools are not always required to report data about their schools or not required to take the same tests as public schools. Many private schools take different standardized tests; however, that information is often made available only to families of enrolled students. We strive to acquire additional private school data whenever available.

What is the GreatSchools Rating?

The GreatSchools rating is a simple tool for parents to compare schools based on test scores, student academic growth, and college readiness. It compares schools across the state, where the highest rated schools in the state are designated as “Above Average” and the lowest “Below Average.” It is designed to be a starting point to help parents make baseline comparisons. We always advise parents to visit the school and consider other information on school performance and programs, as well as consider their child's and family's needs as part of the school selection process.
