this ia written by a teacher who had a great experience being in the RVHS faculty. I had the pleasure of working there for a year and I can say it was refreshing to say the least. I was treated immediately as one of their peers. The students were for the most part normal teenagers trying to get through high school. The teaching staff was very professional and cared deeply for the students. Rating RVHS on a scale from 1 to 10, I would rate my experience an 8.5. There is still room for growth in all things. Good luck this year and keep up the great work.
I attended this school and in my opinion, the teachers were sub par and did almost nothing to encourage and challenge students.
I don't know what this other parent has against RVHS, but compared to some of the schools, we are definitely competitive- musically, academically, and even athletically. Sure, maybe we don't 'challenge' like Harding does, but let's think about this- our job is not to be college professors, if students want that, have them take PSEO. But if you notice at OSUM, you see the same thing...so I really don't know why you're taking it out on RV. There are extra curricular activities available for anyone and everyone- from politics to music, sports to academia...whatever floats your boat.
I have been generally disappointed with the quality of education provided by River Valley H.S. My younger two children have attended here, but my older two were at Marion Harding H.S. I believe my older two worked harder and were challenged to think more than my younger ones have been. I am disappointed in the lack of real pre-college thinking skills presented by most of the teachers, with the exception of the Spanish teacher. Too many teachers have wasted time in class and others expected students to already understand material without really doing any 'teaching.' Some of the coaches were, in my opinion, actually stealing money from the district instead of helping students to grow in skills and confidence in their chosen sports. The new building is great, and the guidance counselors have been helpful, but I would otherwise not recommend this school.
This is a wonderful school. The attention a student gets is uncomparible to big city schools. Class sizes are sometimes only 10-12, depending on the class you are enrolled in. The teachers all know you and you know everyone else. It was a great experience for me and I'm sorry I had to leave.
