Public or Private?

Just moved to New Albany and the 4th grade score is a 9 out of 10. My son has attended St Matthias Catholic school for 5 years which has no rating. Want the best acadimic program available. Any suggestions?

Hi. I'm not from OH, but I can give you some insights into the ratings on Greatschools...they only rate public schools, because they get their data from state NCLB (No Child Left Behind) testing, which is a public program. My son attended a Catholic school where I live, and the local archdiocese maintains test data on all the schools in their jurisdiction. While you still can't make a direct comparison, it should give you a general idea of how well kids perform at both schools. I always caution parents that what really makes the difference is the individual teacher that their child has...we had a "blue ribbon award winning school" and my son ended up with a horrible teacher (she had some personal issues going on that year) but you can also have lower rated schools with teachers that are fantastic. If you can, take a tour of each of the schools you're considering, and then decide.

Assigning ratings to schools is an inexact science at best and a better rating would be the one you give to your son's school or any other school he might attend. No program is the right program for every child and it's difficult at best to say that one program is better than another. There are So many different ways to look at a school and children's needs can be different.
Is your son happy in his current school? Are you happy with it? If both of you are happy, don't let an outside rating make you unhappy.
