Starts out great in K, then goes downhill. Now in 2nd grade, my daughter's Math skills have reversed. She could add in preschool and now she can't. They push the "touchpoint" method. This is a process normally used by special ed students, but touted by a company that sells the idea as a way to pass the gov. tests. They use a form of behavior correction that utilizes class humiliation. Really? Rarely do they show appreciation for good behavior. We do the weeks homework in one night and it only takes 45 minutes. I have worked to "undo" the horrendous math "techniques" taught by Jacobs 2nd grade. There is also a vicious lunch monitor. Don't believe me? Have lunch w/your kid there. Highly recommend finding another school before it is too late. I will be researching whether we can get out. Rated 2 stars for some positive...real close to 1.
My daughter started at Jacobs last year as an inner city transfer, so she could be in all day kindergarten, and it was wonderfull! She loves her teacher and has blossomed as a student!!
I have been very disappointed in Jacobs. When my son started kindergarten last year he was excited and loved to learn. Now after 1 1/2 years at Jacobs, he hates school. He is not challenged academically and has become bored. Even after discussing this with his teacher and principal, nothing has changed. My son is still learning the same things that he had learned at pre-school. Some of the teachers are amazing, whereas others cannot control their classrooms. We are now considering private schools after our experience at Jacobs.
I am really happy with all the teachers and the principal at Jacobs school. My son started last year in kindergarden. He was put in the all day class which I knew he would need. I periodically came in to help his teacher with different activities, So I saw how the class went on occasion. His teacher was wonderful. She took the time needed with each student that needed it. She sent home information for sports and other activities that could be joined outside the school. There was nothing I was ever unhappy with about this school.
Of the schools in the Findlay School District, Jacobs tends to be further behind than others. Partly due to socio-economic issues and partly due to curriculum. To the best of my understanding it is the only elementary in Findlay that does not focus on Phonics (unless your child is referred to the Chapter 1 teacher). The good thing is that Findlay does offer open enrollment.
The school seems to have difficulty balancing the slower children with the faster learning children. The academic programs seem standard. The school really lacks in music, art and sports, no outside the classroom options are available. Parent involvment is accepted and sometimes asked for.
Jacobs is in a league by itself. The teachers are absolutely wonderful and really care about their students. I commend everyone that works at Jacobs for their efforts!
