My daughter has attended Garfield City Schools since kindergarten and will be leaving Maple Leaf this year. I have been relatively satisfied with her learning experience there. I believe that the teachers are concerned and are doing the best that they can do to facilitate that experience. Ultimately, the parents have a responsibility to become directly involved in ALL areas of this process; that includes making sure children are emotionally, socially, and mentally prepared for school. Unfortunately, there are some parents that fall short in doing so (for one reason or another)...our children and the teachers are left to contend with the ramifications. With that being said, I appreciate the efforts that these (and all teachers) put forth in educating children.
I totally agree with the first two parents from last years review! I have two children in mapleleaf and they both have had problems with unruly children! No matter how many times I have called the school or even visited nothing is ever done! We are counting down the days till school is out because they will not be returning to garfield schools!
I dont feel my daughter is always safe in this school. The teachers and principal will not take the action they should in discipling problem children, they just look the other way.
This school has done a disservice to my child. The environment is unruly and out of control. THe teachers are threatened by parental interest and participation. The disciplinary tactics are uneffective. The unruly children continue their behavior and the good students suffer the consequences and go unrewarded. It is evident by the test scores that this school is not serving its purpose which would be to educate our children.
My experience has been great overall. The teachers and faculty are very dedicated to the success of the students. The principal is exceptional. The willingness of parents to become involved always impresses me. A real team effort! If I could change one thing, it would be the time the kids start school; 7:30 am is too early for 9 and 10 year olds. It is also a hassle for working parents to arrange after school care starting at 2:00 pm.
The teachers and principal are great. I mainly have a problem with how old this building is. My daughter says the ceiling of the cafeteria is falling down. I don't feel safe with that.
Out of all of the schools in Garfield we have had the best experience with Maple Leaf Intermediate. The teachers are concerned with students and if they are concerned about anything, contact the parents to come up with a solution to help the child improve and keep parents informed. My child's 5th grade teacher has been absolutely wonderful. The principle is also one of the best we have in Garfield Hts. My son also had him at William Foster before he took the position at MLI. He was also a great principle there. If I knew he was in charge of all of the schools I'd have no qualms about keeping my children in this school system. However, my experience with the other schools has been less than impressive and we are looking to relocate so my younger ones don't have to go to Elmwood, the middle school, or high school.
