I think it is a great school. I have 2 children that are attending now one in high school one in middle school. The teachers seem to have a good relationship with students. My oldest son graduated from a bigger school district and I wish we would have started him in Garfield too.
I graduated from this school in 1985 and have had two sons graduate. Garfield has an excellent education programs and you can tell that the majority of the teachers really care about their students and this school. Keep up the good work!
Smaller school based on student body but it has quite a bit to offer. It offers open-enrollment too. Excelent art programs, including photography, digital photography and computer generated art. Music program is strong, no orchestra though. Althletics, very good and well rounded.Finishes first in district often. Teacher here are amazing. Very personable, outgoing, helpful and friendly. Has a lot of clubs that are open to any one. Over all great school.
The sports programs at James A. Garfield seem to be on the rise agian, however I agree there needs to be some educational changes made. I fell that it starts with the top and works its way down to the teachers.
There are many things that go on in this school that shouldn't. Teachers are letting/making students watch southpark (a very unappropriate show). A certain teacher who teaches an advanced class is late to class every day and comes in and out as he pleases. In this same class he gave everyone an 'A' for grading papers from his 'regular' class.
If Garrettsville would become mutlicultural, then maybe some of the racism that is involved in GHS would disappear. Maybe the math scores would improve, as I too am a former student and still struggle with my math scores, to realize that students have different learning abilities instead of just looking over the 'less bright' and focusing on the more 'popular' children and their futures. To explain that even though you don't have resources to attend college there is plenty of financial aid out there to help the less fortunate, something our counselors fail to tell their students.
I am a former student of the Garfield School District. I'm not one bit surprised to see how low the academic scores are, especially for Math. I am still struggling to this day with math.
