Profanity and sexuality in hallways is a problem at EVERY school, much worse at others even in the area. Diversity is not always racial, difference in opinion and learning levels offers great diversity in the classroom. The school offers spanish and mandarin (two languages). French was cut due to lack of interest. Acceptance was not an issue, and drugs are a problem at EVERY school. Independence is better than most private schools on that issue. As a student who graduated from this school in the summer, I can say that the past comment must've been a one time walkthrough. You can not make an analysis on a school by walking down the hallways once.

I was very unhappy with this school. As i walk down the hall t here is a great amount of profanity and sexuality in the hallways. There is a complete lack of diversity. There are not a wide range of classes to choose from, and only one foreign language. This sets your child up for a disadvantage. The kids are not very friendly or accepting and there is a major drug problem in the school, that needs to be addressed, i would not suggest sending your child to this horrible educational enviroment.

Independence schools are rated Excellent for completely valid reasons - Excellent people teaching hard working kids with involved and caring parents - THE magic equation for academic success! Considering the districts very small size makes this accomplishment even more amazing. It's therefore REALLY unfortunate that some of the wealthiest people in our small town have chosen to unilaterally undermine our premier educators and adminstrators valiant efforts by leading the charge against the recent levy issues. I find this a sad and pathetic testimony to the selfish and pathetic agendas of a few nut job 'townies' that fancy themselves some kind of 'town bosses' in pursuit of power, some kind of sick prestige as tough financial guys, or just to draw attention to their pathetic selves - regardless of their efforts - we've still got the magic and even their underhanded efforts can't change that.

I am a recent graduate of Independence High School, and my only complaint lies in factors that can only be determined by school size. For example, a wider range of clubs, languages, and honors/AP classes would have benefitted my time at IHS greatly. However, because the school is so small these extra options are simply not practical or able to come into existence. Perhaps with the building of the new school and the eagerness of the younger staff, these extra options may soon become a reality. Aside from this, my time at IHS was enjoyable and I feel as though I was provided with an education that has prepared me for my college years.

About the tests

In 2010-2011 Ohio used the Ohio Graduation Test (OGT) to test students in grade 10 in reading, writing, math, science and social studies. State averages displayed on public school profiles include public schools only. State averages displayed on private school profiles include private schools only. The OGT is a high school graduation requirement for public schools and chartered private schools. The OGT is a standards-based test, which means it measures how well students are mastering specific skills defined by the state of Ohio. The goal is for all students to score at or above proficient on the test.

About the tests

Ohio uses the Performance Index to provide an overall indication of how well students perform on its standardized tests each year. The Performance Index scores are based upon how well each student does on all tested subjects in grades 3 through 8 and 10. Schools and districts earn anywhere from 1.2 points for each student scoring at the advanced level to zero points for each untested student. The Performance Index ranges between 0 and 120, with 100 as the statewide goal for all students.

About the tests

In 2010-2011, the Ohio Department of Education used the Value-Added Measure to show how much growth students made on the Ohio Achievement Test since the last school year. The state expects that student test scores will show an average year's worth of growth compared to test scores from the previous year. Ohio's Value-Added Measure is not the same as Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP), a federal measure which uses different criteria.
