My daughter has attended J F Burns for the past 3 years, and our experience there has been outstanding. She needed advanced educational opportunities, and the school has been attentive to ensure she's been challenged. The school provides a very positive, supportive environment for kids and the administration has been responsive to any concerns I've brought forth. The teachers have been kind but firm, communicative, and approachable-- and responsive. The workload has been appropriate, and the overall experience there has been terrific. Of utmost importance: my daughter has been VERY HAPPY at J F Burns and always looks forward to going to school! That is the biggest endorsement I can give!

My children and grandchildren have gone through JF Burns. Exceptional teachers, administrators, and community. Always available to assist and guide our children. Caring and personal.

J. F. Burns is an awesome school for all children! It has such a positive atmosphere from the moment you walk into it. The administration sets this positive tone. Our children have been receiving a high quality education and have received any and all support and/or enrichment they have needed. There are many varied enrichment programs available, as well. A+++++

The school is fantastic and the teachers and principal have been wonderful with our child this year. Next year our daughter will be in second grade and she has had wonderful experiences so far at the school. They genuinely care about how the students are progressing and offer many opportunities for children that need extra help to receive it.

We are so utterly disappointed in this school. We moved to this neighborhood based on the overall scoring and word of mouth. We were expecting a school above average, and we found a school hanging on average by a thread. The parent involvement is very high, that would be the one star for this school. Very outdated and the principal is more concerned with image than she is about providing fantastic education for the students. Thumbs down.

The school and staff are shockingly unprofessional and are incredibly ancient in their teaching skills. I highly regret moving to this area for the school system. One of the biggest mistakes of my life as I believe a child's school is the most important influence on their future.

I have two children that have both gone through school here, and I feel this was a TERRIBLE school, if you have a boy, do not send him here. All they care about is passing the test scores at this school, and just doing enough to get by. My son is an active boy, that still talks about how the teachers treated him, and they weren't much better with my daughter.

In my opinion J.F. Burns is terrible school. While some teachers are very good, the administration does the bare minimum required by the state. The school does not provide any special assistance to students unless they act out (i.e. become a behavior problem). When I recently walked thru many of the classrooms, teachers have no storage and keep dozens of box around classroom to store materials. Meaning, teachers do not have any closets or cabinets for storage. This is hardly a supportive educational environment for students.

I feel that J.F. Burns is an amazing school! The teachers are wonderful as well as the administration! The teachers have helped make this school a wonderful environment for learning! The teachers are dedicated to making the students a priority by providing a nurturing, supportive, and academically challenging environment with attention to the students' individual needs. I would recommend this school to any parent wanting the best for their child!

This school has been a big disappointment. It is probably fine for most kids, but our first grader needs special reading and language arts instruction which have not been made available. The special reading instructions for students is focused on standardized test, and there is little or no focus on the quality of the overall education. The caliber of most of his teachers has been shockingly poor. I can not recommend this school, but only in contrast to most of the other public schools in the area.

My son has attended both Kindergarten and most of first grade at this school. He loves the classes and especially the teachers. They seem to bring out the best in the children. My son is very shy but because of the wonderful efforts of his teachers he is participating in both large and small group discussions and feels comfortable reading to the entire class. I encourage anyone in this area to send theie children to this school.

About the tests

In 2010-2011 Ohio used the Ohio Achievement Assessment (OAA) to test students in grades 3 through 8 in reading and math, and in grades 5 and 8 in science. The OAA is a standards-based test, which means it measures specific skills defined for each grade by the state of Ohio. The goal is for all students to score at or above proficient on the test.

About the tests

In 2010-2011, the Ohio Department of Education used the Value-Added Measure to show how much growth students made on the Ohio Achievement Test since the last school year. The state expects that student test scores will show an average year's worth of growth compared to test scores from the previous year. Ohio's Value-Added Measure is not the same as Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP), a federal measure which uses different criteria.

About the tests

Ohio uses the Performance Index to provide an overall indication of how well students perform on its standardized tests each year. The Performance Index scores are based upon how well each student does on all tested subjects in grades 3 through 8 and 10. Schools and districts earn anywhere from 1.2 points for each student scoring at the advanced level to zero points for each untested student. The Performance Index ranges between 0 and 120, with 100 as the statewide goal for all students.
