Being African-American at Hathaway Brown, I found it difficult to fit in throughout my years in middle school (I began in 5th grade). However, once I entered high school, while cliques and so forth do exist, I found that I was able to really get the gist of education and I was able to focus on my studies and make the most of what I was learning. By 10th grade, I was stretching my schedule as far as I could, trying to fit in all different types of classes. I took two languages, non-western dance, and eventually participated in study abroad to Southeast Asia. I think that HB, while difficult, is truly a great resource if you can just stick with it, get things done, and learn how the game goes. It really prepares a person for college, as long as the family is supportive and so forth, and the college counseling office is AWESOME! They are so nice and supportive and the teachers aren't all nice but for the most part they are wonderful! I honestly have found myself wanting to learn more about subjects such as Biology and Contemporary American History and Politics simply because the teachers themselves were so AWARE and passionate about what they teach. If you can, go to HB.

My daughter graduated from HB and my granddaughter is now a student there. Although expensive, I considered it to be worth every dollar we spent on our daughter's tuition. Now that my granddaughter is a student there, I still find it to be filled with an exciting, academically stimulating atmosphere.

I really love HB! All of the teachers here are so kind and supportive and the curriculum is very challenging. It may have the reputation of being "cliquey" and "affluent" but it is really a community full of girls from all different walks of life and who care about one another. I consider about half my my grade as friends because everyone here is so nice. I had never been challenged or had so much fun while learning until I came here. There is a lot of homework and school can get pretty stressful, though. But overall, I really like it here.

I started at HB in 7th grade and switched to Laurel School in 10th grade. While at HB, I was pushed academically, however fitting is socially was the hardest thing to do at this school. Unless you switch your daughtor over while they are young- they have a very little chance of making life-long friends l like i was able to at Laurel due to the materialistic cliques at HB. If your switching your daughter over anywhere from 6th-11th grade, I genuinely recommend you send her to Laurel School. There, I was receiving the same amazing education, but under less social stress.

I graduated from HB in 2007. To speak honestly about the school I think it is amazing. I received a great education and am currently at one of the top 25 colleges in the USA. It does an excellent job at college prep and the environment is like no other. I felt close to my entire graduating class and consider them all friends. The teachers really take the time to make educating the students a priority. It is well known and well respected! I say with pride, 'I am a graduate of the Hathaway Brown School.' And to the parent who submitted the review saying that the school was cliche and horrible, I am sorry that your daughter wasn't a good fit for the school, but in the realm of private prep schools HB stands out as one that ventures outside of the norm. Amazing school. Me and my family moved a year ago. My child wanted to come back to Ohio just because of H.B. She missed is immensely. The instructors are extremely supportive, and as my child says, 'They are more like our friends than our teachers.'

The school seems more concerned with its external perception than in effectively engaging and educating its students. Although the teachers are committed the overall administration seems less concerned with student success than in its perception as a leader. Truthfully, I feel they are more concerned with athletics than academics because that is another area that feeds the headmasters already bloated ego. Although I continue to believe in the benefits of single-sex education I am looking for an alternative for my daughter.
