Horrible problems with bullying no one does anything swept under the rug. God for bid if its an athlete doing the bullying not even a slap on the wrist. Nothing but a bunch of rich kids with a better than now complex. Moving ASAP this school is not worth going too unless you are the star football player.

My son moved from Champion to Howland 2 years ago and it has been a good experience. The academics are very good, I've always had good communication with teachers and administration. He was accepted quite well, even coming into the school in 8th grade. Sports are pretty good, could use some new coaches. Overall, I'm very pleased with Howland, much more diversified, unlike many other county schools in this area.

Most of the laud for the Howland school system comes from the children who are not academically inclined. Emphasis in Howland is places on athletics and undue resources given to children with learning disabilities or average academic ability while the system heavily disfavors those with natural intelligence who elect to take the hardest courses. The children who attend the school are notably unwelcoming and judgemental, and my child had great difficultly adapting while he found friends and influence nearly everywhere else he went. Overall, I would suggest that any parent who wishes for their child to be able to be educated well in a good environment avoids Howland.

I am not a parent, but a graduate of Howland. I think the quality of teachers and education at Howland is superb. As a college student, I feel that Howland Schools did an excellent job of preparing me for continued education. The band program is awesome. Parents are involved and care.

I had an overall bad experience with Howland Schools. I went through the entire system and have never been happy with administration or teachers. The teachers and principals care more about the football team than actually teaching.

The educational system at this school is punative to say the least. They do not encourage a child and motivate them. The Honors Program is a joke. It is only a larger amount of work, not working smarter. Favoritism is at an all time high. Sports are held in the highest esteem. Administrators are either unreachable to problems or turn their heads.

academics are avg. at best. Extracurriculars are available, sports struggle due to lack of coaching choices and political ways. Too many things being covered up in this school.

Most teachers simply are not interested in the well-being of the students. It is learn what I am teaching...that's it. Big problem with superintendant.

Howland not only has an amazing academic program led by teachers who also teach at nearby universities, but the musical and sports programs are some of the finest in the state. It is private school standards at no cost!

About the tests

In 2010-2011 Ohio used the Ohio Graduation Test (OGT) to test students in grade 10 in reading, writing, math, science and social studies. State averages displayed on public school profiles include public schools only. State averages displayed on private school profiles include private schools only. The OGT is a high school graduation requirement for public schools and chartered private schools. The OGT is a standards-based test, which means it measures how well students are mastering specific skills defined by the state of Ohio. The goal is for all students to score at or above proficient on the test.

About the tests

Ohio uses the Performance Index to provide an overall indication of how well students perform on its standardized tests each year. The Performance Index scores are based upon how well each student does on all tested subjects in grades 3 through 8 and 10. Schools and districts earn anywhere from 1.2 points for each student scoring at the advanced level to zero points for each untested student. The Performance Index ranges between 0 and 120, with 100 as the statewide goal for all students.

About the tests

In 2010-2011, the Ohio Department of Education used the Value-Added Measure to show how much growth students made on the Ohio Achievement Test since the last school year. The state expects that student test scores will show an average year's worth of growth compared to test scores from the previous year. Ohio's Value-Added Measure is not the same as Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP), a federal measure which uses different criteria.
