I've lived in the district for almost 20 years and my third child is in the high school now, my older two having graduated and gone on to college. My husband, who came from a huge Cleveland area school system, and I (from another Wayne Co. school) have been extremely pleased with the schools, the administration (most recent, I will add), and the teachers; our kids have excelled and continue to. The community at large is supportive and school-spirited; our system is one of the few that is not currently in trouble fiscally. The arts are lacking, though. Overall, we are glad to be Huskies and recommend the schools to anyone.
Northwestern has three schools - a k-5 elementary, 6-8 middle school and 9-12 high school on a nice campus setting with recently constructed or renovated buildings. The teachers, support staff, administrators and students are fantastic to work with and all support one another in a learning culture. The Northwestern is very supportive of the schools and help make this school district special! I would not send my children anywhere else!
In order to better assist students in their academic endeavors, Northwestern needs to provide students with access to AP course, which are imperative for acceptance into some of the countries most prestigious colleges and universities. Furthermore, the school needs to stop discriminating on the bases of class; tracking is detrimental to students and prohibits students in lower tracks from pursuing more enriching academic interests. Overall, the academic program is subpar and students need to demand more from the administration and the administration needs to raise their standards. The music program is phenomenal.
Great academics here. Leadership is strong in the new principal. She expects kids to be responsible and treats them as mature young people rather than younger aged. There are new things happening at the school to get parents in and the teachers seem to really want to help kids. Principal stresses personal integrity and tolerance of others. Students are listened to even though they may not like the outcome because the school is strict on attendance, discipline and dress code. There is a real focus on learning and education comes first even though the sports program is really good.
NHS - I'm a graduate of 2004. This ia a neat place mostly because of the teachers who really care and make you learn. Some kids gossip but if you get involved and stay away from that garbage your life here is pretty cool. I've gone through a few principals but the last one was really OK. I thought she was real strict at first and mean but like everyone else, I found out she really liked us and wanted to know about what we thought about and what we did. She wasn't afraid to say hi in the halls and if you didn't say hi back she'd just say it again. Soon I got to looking forward to seeing her before and after school saying hi or have a good night. She trusted us and expected us to do and act our best. I learned alot from her.
Northwestern High School is a great school. The staff genuinely cares about the students and go out of their way to help them learn. Teachers are willing to accomodate the needs of students and for the most part are sensitive to special circumstances. The principal truly cares about the students in her school, is open to listening and understanding where students and parents are coming from and tries hard to communicate her concerns and position in a direct and consistent way. She has high expectations for students and therefore the comment about the dress code, which for many parents was a great relief. She enforces a code of behavior and a learning environment set to help students prepare for the working world. Therefore she is a stickler about regular attendance, places a strong emphasis on academics, and and an environment of mutual respect and self-discipline.
Nothwestern is a good school for the most part I believe that the dress code is too strict and it should be lessened. Northwestern also has good sports and extracurricular activities but you can not do more than one sport at a time due to schedule conflicts I think this should be changed.
