I sure hope they stopped beating kids with a paddle and hired teachers who actually enjoy being around kids. I went there in the mid 80s, it's amazing people can be paid to terrorize kids and label it "discipline". I sincerely hope this school has changed since I was there.

My boy is in Kindergarten and his teacher is wonderful. They discipline well and have very regular reviews which helps me concentrate on areas where we need to work. Shawnee Elem. invites and encourages all parents to volunteer and they make it possible with multiple after-school activities for working parents to attend. Although, I would rather have an all day kindergarten, my son seems to be learning just as fast as our friends children who are in all day kindergarten. The school does need to get air conditioning, but that is not their fault because they stretch their dollars as far as they can. The state is to blame for most of schools' problems. Our teachers at Shawnee are first rate!

My thoughts on certain educational matters concerning the school is: one, there isn't enough teacher-student hands-on time together. One-on-one time with students is more important these days for the children. Parents should be more involved, even if it means taking time off work to visit the class to see what their child is doing in the class occasionally. Also, I think that there should be somekind of refresher booklets handed out for the parents to be able to help their kids. with the newest ways they have to teach math, some of the parents are stumped! Some of these parents graduated 15 years ago. How do we help them when don't even know how to do it ourselves? Help us help our kids! Thanks
