we loooove John Ross! This is the 2nd EPS elementary school my kids have attended. Our first was a Great Schools rated "10" school in another part of Edmond. After checking the rating here, I was not initially excited about attending John Ross, which was an "8", and almost reconsidered buying our house. We requested a transfer back to our old school, but were denied due to overcrowding. So glad we were! John Ross is leaps and bounds better than our old school. It is a great expectations model school and they do more than just hang the banner. They practice the principles every day.
They care about the kids, not just their test scores. They love parents and practice positive reinforment. The teachers have been there for years and the routine is well established, so very little daily chaos (aside from what you would expect for k-5). At our old school, they didn't have daily morning assembly to get the kids geared up for the day. My kids have thrived and I am so glad I didn't get my transfer! The "10" school can learn a lot about how to raise great kids and foster their love of learning from the "8" school.
Absolutely love this school. The best school I have seen since we came back to Oklahoma. Unfortunately, our children have had to endure several school changes and this one by far is the best one. The parent volunteer is awesome and then kids participation and wanting to participate is outstanding. The teachers genially care a great deal about their students. I cannot say enough good things about this school. But I love it!!!!
This is our first year at John Ross after many years at a private school. We are so impressed! The teachers are all extremely professional and seem to enjoy teaching and the kids. They communicate with parents and let you know whats going on, good and bad. The principal and staff are exceptionally helpful even in conflict situations. They seem very proactive on the behavior issues that occur at every school. They dont wait.. they take action immediately. Even though this school is fairly large, it doesnt feel like it. The curruculum plans are well thought out and each grade has an overall plan where the teachers work as a team. We are happy to get get feedback on how our children are developing as compared to national edcuation standards. They intervene when a child is struggling and give them the extra asisstance needed. They challenge the kids who are above grade level to keep them engaged. Every time we walk into the school, we are greeted with friendliness and courtesy. Parents are welcomed into the classrooms and there are always lots of parents there - helping out. We couldn't ask for a better program. Thank You John Ross Teachers and Staff. You are Great!
John Ross is undergoing some growing pains this year due to much needed renovations. Half of the school was renovated over the summer and it is absolutely gorgeous! My kids were thrilled with the new classrooms. The administration and teachers are attentive and are doing a wonderful job. My kids are challenged and love going to school!
Impressive changes over the last few years! Energy and enthusiasm with increased academic expectations and help for strugglng students are some of the things I've noticed. My child loves going to school and has made great progress academically.
I love John Ross! I am a graduate student in education and love that John Ross is using Response to Intervention, Professional Learning Communities and many of the recommendations I'm studying in my graduate classes. My child loves his teachers and learning! Teachers and staff are very professional.
This is our first year at John Ross but love it so far we have had no falling outs and the kids seem to all be well adjusted unlike our boys old school who had lots of bullying and the teachers screamed and yelled all the time treating them like they were in prison or boot camp. John Ross is a breath of fresh air compared and they have learned so much. I don't know why any parent would be griping about not having homework???? That just shows the teachers are doing there jobs and helping the kids get it done at school and not overloading them, its a good thing that we aren't having to do the teachers jobs.
Our children have been at John Ross for the past four years and my husband and I are extremely pleased with their progress. The teachers are great to work with and they really challenge our children. My kids have reading homework every night and math, social studies, and science throughout the week. We have found the staff very helpful and professional. I have volunteered there for two years and have always felt welcome and appreciated for my efforts. Our kids are learning and thriving at John Ross.
When I took a position in OKC we chose Edmond solely because the schools were said to be the best in the state. I believe many who move to the area from out of state will be suprised by Edmond Schools. Although I understand they are not bad and very good for the area - like the road construction methods here - the methodology and style of learning used in this school system is 10yrs + behind some of the neighboring states. It is like steeping back in time where many of the teachers raise their voices (yell) and expect young children to be perfectly still while standing in a line. Those who are extremely happy with this system have not experienced more modern positive reinforcement systems. (They actually work extremely well.)
This school does not challenge my children. My 2nd grader has not had a single item of homework the entire school year so far. We moved here from another state and John Ross (or Edmond schools maybe?) has not caught up to my kids yet this year. Very disappointing! Also, the woman that works the front counter in the office is horribly rude and I'm not the only parent to say this. We will not be there next year. Sad they are losing me, because I don't work and have not felt welcome to volunteer in the classroom or the school even after asking several times. Can't wait for this year to be over!
