I have two children attending Nichols and I am very pleased with the new leadership of the new principle she seems very concerned for the children and keeps the teachers on task. I do several drop by's unexpected and I am very involved so I see first hand what goes on in the classroom of my children and in the halls. I am concerned with a few teachers being more social than they should be during the day but the new principle seems to have her thumb on them. Way to go Nichols.
My thoughts on the school it needs more camera's installed to make sure the teachers are actually doing their job to the best of their ability. I had been a volunteer at that school and was so saddened by the lack of attention some children deserved.
The special education dept. does need more funding, but as a parent of a child in that dept.for 4 years I cannot say enough about the care and teaching that Mrs. Barbara Loring and her aides gave my child. She never would have come as far as she did without their teaching and attention. She will attend middle school next year, and I wish she could spend all l2 years with Mrs. Loring and her aides.
Our school has had a lot of administrative changes over the last few years. This has had an effect on all areas including parent involvement. We do have overall an educated staff that are very caring. No child left behind has put a lot of stress on teachers but they are doing their best to cope and adapt.
This school is in dire need of funding! Their playground equipment for instance is very old. The kids need to have more field trips also. The staff has seen an impressive amount of new teachers this year. There are still some of the old school hard nosed ones left. The special education department definitely needs more funding as it seems they are short handed for workers. Higher degrees need to be a faction in recruiting teachers as some of them have no more than an associates degree. Overall I would say do some research into other schools such as Wilson and Roosevelt as they are both extremely good schools!
All of my children have attended this school for years now. So far, the work is easy for the kids. The teachers as well as the new principal need more training at being more communicative and compassionate with the students as well as the parents. This school just needs to have better funding and more experienced teachers. This is has been an observation of mine for more than 3 years. Please consider this review before enrolling your child/children here. Thanks.
