I have two children at Edison. We have experienced both the community program and the magnet program. The academics don't seem to be a whole lot better in the magnet program, but the caliber of students and the amount of discipline improved a great deal. My children attended a phenomenal elementary school. Edison is the only experience I have with a larger school so I may not have a broad perspective, but I am more than a bit disappointed with Edison. Even in the magnet program, I feel the academics are sub-standard. We have had a very difficult time with grades being entered into Power Schools correctly. I have to keep a close eye on it because both of my boys have received zeros on tests/assignments that they turned in and got As on. When there is a discrepancy or problem, the teachers, as a general rule, are not very approachable. They tend to blow the students off and procrastinate. Obviously this does not go for every teacher, but a great majority of them seem to only be there to clock in and out and get a paycheck.
I am a current student at Edison Middle School. I came from a smaller TPS Elementary School.I have been involved with clubs and athletics meeting many types of students from many different backgrounds.I love my school, the teachers, coaches and classmates are some of the best students in Tulsa.Thank You Edison for keeping the school to it;s high expectations and allowing the students the opportunity to excel beyond my imagination.I look forward to moving right into the High School experience like my older sister has done.Thank You Edison, this school is the best!
As a parent,I have seen the hard work from my child payoff when staying in the community program for a year and then being accepted into the AP magnet program after that.It took a lot of hard work and initiative but in the end my daughters hardwork paid off.It is easy to see the school as two different entities but the programs are based on the same curriculum.I have seen many of my childs friends transfer, move and then come back to Edison.Sometimes people are the problem and not the school. All in all our family had been extremely pleased with not only the grades but the lifeskills being taught in thei school system. We look forward to having our younger child go to Edison Middle School as well.Great job teachers and staff! We do love our school and it shows.
This is a very good school and only getting better. I don't have experience with the community part of the school but our daughter has been served well by the magnet program. She feels safe there and has made many friends across the socio-econ. spectrum. The teachers and admin. are approachable and as responsive as can be expected in a large school environment. The school's located in a nice part of midtown tulsa.
Edison is a fantastic middle school and continues to improve each year. There is a heterogeneity in the students that adds to the educational experience.
The variety in ratings of this school is directly related to whether the child is in the magnet program or in the community program. All the resources and good teachers are given to the magnet program students. The community students are left with the dregs. In her two years at Edison, my daughter went from a high-B average to barely passing. The teachers lost students' homework and gave them zeros. They screamed at the students (I personally witnessed this on more than one occasion). Some of the worksheets that teachers prepared for the students looked like they were written by borderline illiterates. The classes were overcrowded and the hallways were warzones. Discipline was either extremely heavy-handed or nonexistent. At the same time, I have heard parents of students in the magnet program praise the school to the skies. It is truly two different schools in one building.
I saw another parent's comment about her daughter not getting evaluated properly for an IEP, and the same thing happened to my daughter. They supposedly did the initial "observation" but never followed up or communicated the results to me. My daugher has been diagnosed with ADD since 2nd grade, and no-one at Edison would support that. The only advice they ever offered me was to make sure she writes down her homework every day in the student planner and show it to me daily. I mean, to get someone with ADD to do that would be a miracle in itself. It's ridiculous. I finally withdrew her near the end of the school year. I've been amazed at how well she's done now that she's not in that drama-filled environment at Edison.
Edison is another terrible TPS middle school. Unless your child is in the "Magnet Program", your child will be considered worthless. There is so much bullying that goes on there, especially amongst the teachers. They bully the kids instead of encouraging them. I was even verbally assaulted by the attendance clerk. TPS really needs to take a closer look at this school.
i dont like edison they dont look at both sides of the story when the kids get introuble and the school is full of drama
i find this a very good school compared to a private school. the previous two years i went to edison and had a better education then when this year i went to victory christian. i do believe in God but not their rules and the way the other students act and how they treat me so inapropreitly. my reputation got ruined there....
