Bullying is a behavior that is often learned in response to stresses in the bully's world. Surprisingly, many bullies are often motivated to abuse others because they have been victims of abusive behavior. The anger that they feel as a result of being hurt is directed toward other individuals. At St. Catherine's the teachers and staff recognize this behavior and take immediate steps to defuse any current issues and to counsel students so that they can recognize the behavior as self damaging. Students are also taught to be strong and to report any such behavior to a teacher.
One of the advantages of St. Catherine is the fact that all of the teachers are responsible for guiding and mentoring students of all ages or grades on respect, integrity, compassion, forgiveness and love just as Jesus Christ taught us to be.
Homework is assigned on a grade-by-grade basis. For example: My third grader has about 30 minutes of homework Monday-Thursday with spelling tests every week. If she wants she can get complete her homework in the after school care 'Homework Help' that is offered by one of the middle school teachers. So even if she was assigned a challenging or difficult concept by the time I pick her up at 5:20 she has had one-on-one help to complete it or understand it so she can finish it at home.
However, my 3 year-old Pre-Kindergartner is a different story. He is energetic, curious and has a short attention span (he's 3). He loves school (his teachers and his friends) but homework is a little different for the little ones. Every day I receive an e-mail note from his teachers telling me what they did that day: from reading different books about the topic for the month (Hedgehogs and Winter) to performing a craft on the letter for the week and the different creative learning centers to include MATH! Yes math! They even note exactly how long he napped! In this note they have Pre-K weekend ‘homework’ but this is intended to reinforce what they have been learning. So this weekend my Pre-K’er is coloring Ks for Kite and a hedgehog but there is no penalty if he doesn’t get it done.
St. Catherine's is a quick 5 minutes off of the intersection of I-44 and HWY 75 which are the veins of all points in and around Tulsa, Jenks, Sand Springs, Sapulpa and Broken Arrow. Located in the heart of the of the West Side of Tulsa and is a key supporter of a renaissance of the area. The school is comfortable and welcoming -the principle welcomes the students each morning at the door. The teachers are prepared are invested in their students and their profession. The administration fully supports continuing and higher education of the teachers and staff. Several of the teachers have a masters degree in various elementary education focus areas not to mention a reading specialist and STEM focused teachers for middle and elementary (Lego Club!). The goal is to teach children to be thinkers and instill daily Christian values. Children are in the hallways hugging their teachers, teacher are writing their students personal notes of praise and continued encouragement. Parents are in the school helping with everything from assisting in the library, sponsoring a after school club or coaching sports. If you are looking for a school that cares for your children, just as they are, just as you do, then St. Catherine's is the place!
Bullying is nonexistant in this school because the class size is small , enough that the students are tight knit throughout the school year. If anything even remotely unkind is said, the teachers nip it in the bud appropriately and swift. Unlike other larger private schools, nobody here seems entitled, better than anyone. The staff really care for each and every student. At pick up and drop off, the principle is there to greet your child at the car, help carry bags, books, open car door for the smaller children. It is a different world at this school, in comparison the other schools. For me, a huge burden is lifted off me just by having my kids here. Problems in previous schools such as bully kids, parents, drama, exclusion do not happen at this school. It is a gem many don' t know about.
My children's school is the best. The teacher's go the extra mile to help their students. Our new principal did an awesome job her first year in her new role. We may be small, but we have great stars rising out of our classrooms every year. Our graduated Eighth Graders go on to high school and maintain their grades. In fact, most are on the honor roll. We are also renovating our school to make some great improvements for our future students. Great things are happening at St. Catherine. Come check us out.
Saint Catherine's is a wonderful school. Teachers and administrators put out great effort to make sure that ALL students learn according to their ability. Students who have attended there do well academically and socially in high school. My step-granddaughter, who was very behind in all subjects when she started there, was helped by all the teachers and advanced nearly 4 grade levels in two years. She is now doing well in high school -- but couldn't have without St. Catherine.
Saint Catherine School has provided my family with a home away from home for the last eight years. The teachers are as dedicated to helping my child learn as my husband and I are, and will often go out of their way to ensure his needs are met both academically and spiritually.
Saint Catherine School has challenging academics, talented teachers, and a focus on helping children learn to take ownership of their own success. It is a wonderful, loving environment that nurtures both mind and soul. We love it!
