Yes, I agree...the API score of Wetumka was lower than that of the state average last year, but...the API has been on the rise and that is what is important! Children need not only a teacher to believe in them, but they also need encouragement at home. Unfortunately, that is our biggest problem. Our school is full of bright wonderful kids who need to know that someone cares. I, for one, am sick and tired of people bad mouthing Wetumka. We have got to all be willing to go that extra mile to help improve our school and our community. **note** they might not be the minority, but I can tell you from experience that they are discreminated against more so than other children. But that is not the important issue**
Please, let's talk facts! Caucasian children are not the minority in Wetumka, they constitute 61% of the enrollment. Please quit playing the race card. As for parent involvement, compare the numbers of parents who appear during the periodic parent/teacher conferences to all other area schools and I believe you will be surprised. Reality is, Wetumka does lack in several areas. Last year, WHS' API score was 697 while the state average was 1086. The dropout rate was 22%. Factors that affect these include the ratio of students to FTE Teachers (1-57) and the socio-economic status of the area (Wetumka ranks 524 of 541 in income & poverty levels). Community leaders must understand the importance of economics and its ancillary relationship to other factors. Running to another school district with your child, however, is not the answer. You then have no voice in the matter. Accent the positive and address the negative!
There is very little parent involvement, and the principal is in his first year. The only positive at wetumka's school is the high school science program--outstanding!! White chidren are the minority, and the words 'I'm going to beat you down little white girl' are defended as not being a racial comment. If a child reports bullying, the principal has said that action will not be taken unnless another teacher has witnessed such behavior. 4.0 students who raise test scores each year are transfering to other schools every year because of some of the above reasons. my child has just been transfered, and is excited about going to school for the first time in 3 months.
If the person who wrote the other review knew anything about Wetumka, they would know that we dont have a losing record dated 9 years ago. And the teachers here, some are critical on grading and others not. But, all teachers help children anytime. Every teacher Ive have ever asked, has helped me anytime Ive needed, and has stayed after school to help me.
Wetumka Public Schools is not a great place to have your children attend. The kids are far behind on academics and the teachers don't strive to meet the needs of the children. The sports are terrible with losing records in every sport for the last 9yrs.
