As a new student to Dallas High this year, my daughter has found that the classes seem a bit more advanced than the previous school she attended. There is also a greater variety of classes from which to choose, which her other school just didn't offer.
I have had 3 sons go through this school and I can say that their experiences, though varied, have all been wonderful. The teachers are challenging and caring, the coursework ranges from simple to complex, and the sports and music programs have a lot to offer. Thanks to Keith Ussery and his great staff for the hard work. It was sad to see our last son graduate from this fine high school.
I would agree with both of these reviews. While it's true the schools have had budget issues, this is the excuse they have used every year for a decade or more. Our property taxes went up for 5 years solid, but the school district always points to the budget cuts as the sole reason DHS and all the schools have been failing to set standards, any kind of curriculum, or trying to be cohesive from one grade to the next. We have pored good money into a bad district, and many parents are pulling their students out to go to other schools or home schooling. You end up supplementing so much of your kids education, you may as well just do it yourself. Standards are free, and so is having a better curriculum. The excuses have run thin and parents that care about their kids education are tired of hearing it.
I have found that Dallas High School isn't very good for kids who need engaging classes to keep their attention on their class work. Most of the classes here are meant for kids that have to have things repeated over and over again and have subjects that are taught at a snails pace. Most of the teachers try their hardest but it still is very hard for a lot of students to focus on their studies because they are so bored with having to be spoon fed their classes.
The students at Dallas High Shool have been greatly impacted by the recent budget cuts. Class sizes have increased greatly and the number of electives offered have decreased drastically over the past two years. Sports have been affected as well, resulting in higher fees and a lack of tournaments and competitions. If your child is in need of advanced classes and possibly in the TAG program, DHS is not the school for them. Though it has some great teachers, the learning environment at DHS is not adequate to fulfill your child's academic needs due to budget restrictions.
