My child found about a death in our family while in school, before I had a chance to tell her. Mrs. Den not only checked in with her, but offered to have lunch with my daughter. She also took the time to call me and let me know about the situation. She went a step further to find my son who is not her student and speak with him to find out what he knew. She worked with other staff to ensure he did not find out which allowed me to have the conversation with him. Mrs. Den made a really hard day a little easier for my kids. She is a fantastic teacher with a heart of gold.
This is a small school with a good staff and a great principal. The parent involvement is not what it should be, though there are many opportunities for parents to participate. This is a lower income school and I am afraid the test scores may reflect that. I don't believe in allowing test scores to completely define a school.
As a teaching professional fairly new to the field, I couldn't ask for more skilled, dedicated, supportive, caring co-workers than those at Dayton Grade School. From the office staff to the teachers to the other support personel, all are among the most professional and gifted educators I have ever met. Every day they go 'above and beyond' to offer students the best learning opportunities and support as they grow into responsible, productive citizens. It is no wonder that so many staff at Dayton Grade School have worked in this district for many, many years.
