The teachers are phenomenal - well trained, exceptionally dedicated, and experienced. Their purpose is to teach to the whole child, focusing on all learning styles, starting with a good relationship between student and teacher. Teachers create an exciting learning environment using a variety of traditional and new teaching techniques. Academics are emphasized, and reading, math, writing and verbal communication are at the core of educating each child. The school is Waldorf-based, and history comes alive with the captivating stories the teachers tell and the annual plays the kids create. Music and art are an important part of each child's education, including drawing, painting, knitting, marimba and guitar. Spanish is an important part of the curriculum from fourth grade on. In the middle-school grades, elective classes become important in creating a larger, enriching learning environment. Elective classes have included dance, clay, cooking, photography, acting, and sports, and enlist talented professionals from the wider Eugene community to help educate our kids. Teachers work with the kids on social issues, using different conflict resolution techniques, and may involve several kids or a whole classroom in a solution. Sometimes the school counselor is involved in resolving issues. Family involvement in the school is high. There are many shows and celebrations involving families, music, good food, and cultural diversity throughout the year. Village School is truly is an example of 'It takes a village to raise a child'.
