Kalapuya offers a school environment where students feel a sense of ownership and belonging. The atmosphere is open to all, allowing visitors and students access to all classes so that nothing is hidden away. The students take responsibility for their own success, as is modeled by everyone in the building. The principle teaches classes and works from a desk in the main hall, visible to all and on the same level as his teachers. Students learn all standard content areas, while also remaining active (frequent trips for climbing, kayaking, and hiking) and engaged, learning practical skills and hobbies. One of the most interesting things I've seen is how students clean the school each morning, rather than paying an outside worker, and use the savings on field trips throughout the year. Overall, Kalapuya offers more to the individual than a comprehensive high school can.

This school is a much better fit for my students personality. She had no discipline issues, but the regular highschool setting was very difficult for her. At Kalapuya she was at ease with all of the teachers and most of the students. The schedule of classes is much more sensible compared to Willamette Highschool. It's student body does have high risk population element. It's it's important to keep tabs on your student's progress and any social changed regardless of the school. She's straight edge and succeeding!

About the tests

In 2009-2010 Oregon used the Oregon Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (OAKS) to test students in grades 3 through 8 and 10 in reading and math; in grades 4, 7 and 10 in writing; and in grades 5, 8 and 10 in science. The OAKS is a standards-based test, which means it measures how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of Oregon. The goal is for all students to score at or above the state standard.
