This is one of the most excellent schools I have ever been in. The staff is friendly and inviting. The small class sizes and one on one instruction is legendary. The curriculum is as it should be, allowing children to burn off their physical energy outdoors often so that they can focus on a challenging academic environment indoors. Our children thrived at this school. We are now in California where funds are cut often and art and science programs are not available. Our children are falling behind in reading and math since we moved here due to the enormous class sizes and under-staffing. Our children miss having such a great community and excellent administrators around them. Applegate Elementary is a wonderful school.

About the tests

In 2009-2010 Oregon used the Oregon Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (OAKS) to test students in grades 3 through 8 and 10 in reading and math; in grades 4, 7 and 10 in writing; and in grades 5, 8 and 10 in science. The OAKS is a standards-based test, which means it measures how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of Oregon. The goal is for all students to score at or above the state standard.
