I am very impressed with the teaching staff at Eastwood. I would say that Ms. Monahan (Principal) is always accessible and takes a sincere interest in communicating with parents. I do feel that the assessment needed for struggling children goes far too long undetected. I have a 6th grader that has serious issues with writing that stem back as far as 3rd grade. It is not that the teachers don't care, they just don't have the tools to properly guide students who don't learn by the traditional phonics method. I feel that the LEAVE NO CHILD BEHIND ACT has forced many teachers into passing students, or letting them slide by and now we are seeing the results. Eastwood just doesn't complete the processes required for mastering reading and writing. As a parent, I think their method of phonics is very incomplete.
Son attended Kindergarten at Eastwood for 6 months, we were very unhappy there. The class was 29 kids. Five year olds were expected to work quietly on their own, while the teacher would work with reading groups. The children are not allowed to run at recess. I did not believe this when my son first came home and told me, but it was verified by the office staff. Not sure how they expect a child to sit quietly for 6 plus hours in class when they are not allowed to burn any energy at recess.
I am very pleased with the teaching staff at Eastwood. My daughter has thrived in grades K-3rd. There are several family members who volunteer at the school. Our child was given an opportunity to participate in a pilot math program and did very well. The opportunity was a result of the motivation and hard work by the 3rd grade teaching team. Class sizes are a bit large, but not overly large in comparison with other schools in the area. The extracurricular activities have been great, including pilot programs for science and public speaking. I am not impressed AT ALL with the current principal. Ms. Monahans just doesn't measure up to the previous principal in terms of being accessible to parents. Had we not moved outside the area, and been declined continued attendance for our child at Eastwood Elementary, we would still be proud parents of an Eastwood Eagle.
