All three of my children have attended OMS, and I did when the school was first opened. First, I think Oaklea has some of the best qualified teachers around...Enthusiastic and knowledgeable...The down side, is the teacher core that has been around too long...Those teachers should have been let go or retired, but were waiting it out...I recall my oldest child coming home with "F"s on Progress reports, only to come out of the class with A's, because the tired teacher (that taught my younger sisters years ago) would leave all the homework that needed to be graded in a box under her desk, until she absolutely HAD to grade it. The elective program is no longer a program...No art, no shop, no home ec...Those were prominent back in the 80's...Now electives are band/choir and teachers assistant (which is unpaid work for the student). This WAS a "State of the Art" school, initially...But, somehow, those programs were eliminated due to funding, or lack there of, or failure to manage the funds set for the school. Frankly, with the quality of teachers Oaklea has, I would hope the vision of the administrators would be to bring back the wood shop/foundry, art department, and home ec..
This was an ok school so I was thinking because the Laural elementary school is great but soon found out 5th grade is to soon for middle and this is not a great school kid are using Inappropriate language, hugging kissing and nothing being done, people are fight and nothing done most kids have f's but they done give them after school or Saturday school nothing. Good luck I wouldn't pick this school again if I could change my kid I would.
works for average student, lack electives for advanced learners not to be bored, are being left behind. Math is great w/algebra & geometry. no study halls. gaps in class schedules & lack of staff, school turned to working students as aides. This can be good admin. job skills 1x, making elective rather further learning options, doen't meet needs,or challenge minds, nor does LOAN students to elementary as aide. Are they aware "No Child Left Behind Act" includes talented & gifted kids? With advocacy & lengthy efforts pursued at district, viable plan made. an option to attend partial day at highschool, hitch is transportation to/ from, walking in weather & alone to/from a safety issue, district doesnt provide transportation. Has excellent athletic dept.
My kids started going there and i think its a good school to support
Oaklea MS is a wonderful example of what a middle school can be. The administration sets the tone and the teachers work hard to create a respectful and productive environment for students. In a time when we all have to do more with less, Oaklea shows that it can be done well.
Oaklea is a good school. There are fun teachers and the kids respect them. Sadly there are not many extracurricular activities. The only ones that I am aware of were Yearbook, Leadership, and sports. The parents do alot to help out. Oaklea has many oppurtunitys for the parents to help out. Over all Oaklea is a fine school.
Oaklea is a great school, with caring, strict and reliable staff, good students and a great learning atmosphere. The Cub Club is a parent group that sponsors, fund raisers, parent meetings, dances, field trips and other parent involvement. They have a sports program that is average, music and band, leadership forum for the students and various clubs for the children to attend. The academics program is good as well.
