Pauling Academy has much to offer. Field trips that are part of a greater case study of the Flying Squirrel. The students learned how to trap, weigh and measure squirrels in a field environment. They worked with Wolftree completing hands on observations without endangering either the students or the squirrels. Some students will be part of a program with Reed College for college credit in the science field leading to potential scholarships from the experience. The school also partnerships with Portland Community College allowing students to take courses for both high school and college credit.
I have had two children attend/graduate from Marshall HS/Pauling Academy. Pauling offers AVID, Sun Center, tuitoring, ASPIRE, a full athletic program and speciality classes. You can take statistics, forensics, ecology, advanced biology psychiology, and many advance placement classes. While there may be problems with attendance, the parents are the influential factor. The school has very much to offer if the student/parents take the initiative. Schools are not the answer to education, parential participation is and should be expected. If a child gets a mediocre education at Pauling Academy, the parents need to take a hard look at themselves and the goals they have helped to set with their children. Too many parents and students are quick to blame the system when they fail. My daughter is now beingrecruited by many major Universities, some of which she has an interest and others she has not even contacted such as Boston College.
Very disappointing to have a school with such low expectations with teachers that for the most part are not there much of the time. Very unprofessional leadership. Would not recommend this school. Students are largely unmotivated and quality of education is lacking. This is not a safe environment for the weak at heart. The school is very disorganized with teachers unwilling to help students or their parents understand homework/classwork expectations. Student IEP needs are put on the backburner. Some teachers have been great. Many have not. This is a school focused on having students just show up and pass them through without preparation for the real world.
Too much focus soley on maintaining student attendance. Leadership and administration lacks in many ways. Too much discipline for minor offenses, not enough for serious offenses. Attention to negative student behavior rather than positives. Student morale is very poor. Academic expectations especially in writing is low. Many frequent substitutes. Disorganized staff. Would not recommend school if quality education is what you're looking for.
Please don't send your son or daughter to this school. It is an unsafe environment with much gang related activity.
