Our son is in 4th grade and our daughter is in 1st - both are in the Spanish dual immersion program. Their teachers are excellent - both are getting lots of science in addition to the reading, writing and math. Our 4th grader has learned a ton about Lewis & Clark this year. They both love the music program and PE. We are so lucky to have full time Music and PE teachers. The new interim principal is providing great leadership and is very responsive and accessible.
A great community with wonderful opportunities for kids to participate in several language, garden and after school programs. Great support from parents and the community at large in a diverse and caring setting.
A lovely school made even better by Principal Debbie. We were so sad to see her go! Congrats to her on her promotion. I hope the next principal continues with Debbie's great vision for the school. This school has excellent teachers, a great garden, and an awesome PTA.
This school has gone through many changes in the last three years, and is stronger than ever. Whole programs have been implemented (in years when funding allows) and a laser focus placed on early and successful interventions with struggling learners. It's paying off! The new core curriculum standards are being well integrated and the children are thriving. Test scores are up, though that is only one measure of success. Overall a nurturing environment with great diversity. The parent community is awesome, too. Tremendous volunteerism, and a PTA that really delivers.
We like Atkinson. The newer teachers and some of the older ones are energized by the new principal and her ways and my kid has been really benefiting from some new teaching approaches. Some grades at Atkinson are overcrowded and I think we are now around the size we're supposed to be. Weird personal reviews aren't going to make the enrolment go up. I don't think test scores are everything and saw one teacher work pretty hard on test taking, but I've been to a coffee where testing was covered and scores are up. Anyway you can check scoring on the PPS site for yourself.
Numbers don't lie. Since 2010 enrollment is DOWN 10% compared to other area schools that are UP 10% on average. Parents and students are leaving in droves. PPS may intervene to stop the bleeding but it is going to take years before the damage is repaired fully.
Tons of involved parents, teachers that care about their students and children that love their school. I am happy with Atkinson for my son's elementary school experience.
We've been at Atkinson for a few years now and think its a great school. But change is hard, and I do understand how some parents want to blame the fairly new principal. Our school previously had things in place that were ducking around district policies and they had to be changed, but they felt like big losses to our community. Some changes have required more of the teachers, but there seems to be more support for them, and the school seems to be moving in a very positive direction that helps all the students. I've questioned some decisions, but there is (almost!) always good answers with research and information behind them. Really, most of the pain we've felt has come from district cuts, so we should really blame the weak tax structure that pays for our public schools. Atkinson is doing so many great things with less, but I feel like we need to invest in all our public schools.
There are some great and dedicated staff at Atkinson, but the principal who came here two years ago has really sucked the life and culture out of this formerly lovely school. I realize there are tough choices to be made when funding is short, and there are lots of competing priorities, but the principal doesn't seem to hear parents when we speak up and express what's important to us. She seems to have her own well-focused agenda and is not very open to hearing opinions, exploring other options, and getting creative in order to preserve the character and culture that made this school special.
Seeing the posts from a few parents makes it obvious the ones ok with the poor changes at the school this year were not there last year to know the difference. The changes at the school are positively awful. There is now a very distinct segregation between the immersion program and the neighborhood program. The neighborhood kids are now second class citizens. This is my second year at the school, last year I was worried about PPS poor reviews but was very pleasantly surprised, it was a very nice, warm and inviting school. This year is 100% different. Cold, uncaring, not child focused. Parents concerns are completely disregarded by the new principal and PPS.
Shocked by the one parents repeated bad reviews. Oddly vindictive about a great school! My children have attended for years and have never had any problems. Like most schools, better funding could be there. Wonderful teachers, excellent programs. Don't let sour grapes spoil your child opportunity to be involbved with this excellent multi-ligual school! We love Atkinson!!
The Atkinson I have known and loved for 6 years has been spirited away! I moved to this community because of the school it used to be!The school's new principle refuses to listen to the input of existing involved, educated, community members and has axed virtually all of what made the school special! She not only displays lack of respect for the community, she will not even consider compromising on issues involved parents care deeply about! She cavalierly dismisses scientific research regarding the impact of FREE PLAY time on learning! My students have suffered, and I am seriously considering moving them!
This is a very good school going terribly wrong. The new principal is a disaster. Complaints by students, parents and teachers are rampant. The Principal's bad decision after bad decision plagues our kids every day. Teachers here are fantastic. Many parents are wonderful and involved. However, I would not recommend this school to a friend until the principal is removed.
The change in leadership we have seen this year has been a breath of fresh air. The new principal has shown tremendous leadership, involvement and understanding of what it takes to make a healthy school with a rigorous curriculum. We have considered taking our third grader to a different school throughout his tenure but I'm beginning to think the school has a chance to turn it around. In the first three months I have had more interaction with this principal than I had in three years with her predecessor. In 2012 this will be rated an '8' school.
Atkinson needs new leadership desperately, funding to have smaller class sizes and to reinstate TAG education and change to a Recess Before Lunch schedule. On the plus side we have a phenomenal, large, dedicated group of parent and community volunteers.
Atkinson values its rich diversity, which is reflected in in its multicultural and multilingual population, events, classes, immersion program and signage. It also emphasizes importance of sustainability, the arts (including music) and community, but they are in need of funds like many other schools. It is a wonderful school and they deserve this money. They would make amazing things happen with it.
i love this school the people are great and they have a lot of better learning systems compared to Marysville.
Overcrowded, lack of attention to students, almost cold, uncaring staff.
My son loves this school, and so do I. It has a great community feel, where the parents and teachers really do care about the kids.
